Though both West Indies and Bangladesh fall in the lower half of the test rankings, the two teams had a fiercely contested 2 test series played in Bangladesh and finally West Indies prevailed in the 2nd test by 17 runs and won the series.
It was an unexpected series win for West Indies as due to covid issues many of their best players did not tour Bangladesh. Therefore with less than half strength they managed to beat Bangladesh in Bangladesh in both tests and won the series 2-0 against a team that did not lose a test series at home since 2015 and had teams like England and Australia touring them in last 4 years.
In the first test , the West Indies won in sensational fashion on last day riding on Kyle Mayers double hundred chasing 395 in 4th innings . The 2nd test was equally exciting.
West Indies batted first and scored 419 helped by skipper Braithwate (47) , Nkrumer Bonner (90) and in later half by Joshua DSilva (92) and a belligerent Alzari Joseph (82 with 5 sixes) . Abu Jayed (4/98) looked promising with his pace and Taijul took 3 wickets.
Bangladesh replied with 296 where many batters could not thrive on their starts. Tamim(44) , Musfiqur (54) shepherded the top half while Liton Das (71) and Mehidy Hassan Miraj (57) rescued the team from difficulty to some extent as Gabriel with 3 wickets and Raqueem Cornwall with 5/74 were the most successful bowlers.
With 123 run lead , the West Indies stunningly slumped to 117 allout in 2nd innings with Bonner again the top scorer with 38 . There were many starts but not converted to substantial scores . Kyle Mayers who was such a star after his 4th innings double hundred in 1st test was out cheaply again scoring 5 & 6 in this test. Taijul with 4 wickets was the most successful bowler.
Thus with 241 for victory , Bangladesh started sedately but soon started to lose wickets at wrong times . Tamim Iqbal got a fine 50 but could not continue. Mr Dependable of Bangladesh , Musfiqur Rahim (14) failed to get the runs this time , Liton (22) flattered to deceive again and wickets fell regularly as bulky Raqueem Cornwall bowled a long spell . Mehidy Hassan was still around and he played pretty well scoring gradually as wickets fell around him with target still far off . From 163/8 , Bangladesh took the score to 213/9 . However West Indies kept applying pressure and finally ended the long vigil of Mehidy (31) by having him caught in slips as the fielding team rejoiced . Bangladesh lost by 17 runs in an exciting test match. Man of the match Rakeem Cornwall bowled for 30 overs getting 4/105 and was hugely supported by Warrican (3/47) and Braithwate (3/25) . Nkrumah Bonner for his consistent batting in the series got the player of the series award.
Brief scores :
West Indies 409 & 117
Bangladesh 296 & 213.
