Superb batting by Sri Lankan middle order batsmen Pathum Nissanka and Dickwella took Sri Lanka to a strong position at the end of 4th days play in the 1st test against West Indies . The hosts were 34/1 at close after Sri Lanka were allout for 476 setting a 375 target for West Indies to win the test.
The day began encouragingly for West Indies as Dhananjaya D Silva was clean bowled by Alzarri Joseph after completing his 50 . However Nissanka and Dickwella got together to produce a superb 179 run partnership to frustrate the West Indies . Nissanka scored 103 and Dickwella (96) missed his 100 by 4 runs . After their partnership was broken , the last 5 wickets produced only 38 runs and Sri Lanka were allout for 476.
Set 375 to win , the hosts lost their 1st wicket as Vishwa Fernando had John Campbell caught behind to jolt the West Indies at start . The hosts ended the day at 34/1. They had recently won a test in Bangladesh in a sensational chase of 395 in 4th innings . Can they do an encore ? Kyle Mayers , the double centurion in that test is still to bat.
All hopes rest on an intriguing 5th day as West Indies will look to repeat history .
