West Indies beat Pakistan by the barest of margins in a sensational finish in 1st test

Test cricket was at it’s best at Sabina Park in Jamaica. Pakistan and West Indies went through moments of mediocrity to play out a classic test match on the 3rd day of the first test with result in doubt till the end. Finally, the West Indies batters withstood a brilliant never sat die effort from the Pakistan bowlers to carve out a win by the barest of margins.

Pakistan have themselves to blame for a poor 2nd innings batting performance.  Starting at 160/5 they keenly folded up for 203 thereby losing 5 for 43.  Babar Azam(55) and Faheem Ashraf (20) was out early on the 3rd day that set up the game for the hosts. Hassan Ali’s belligerent 28 helped Pakistan to reach 203.  Jayden Seales (5/55) was brilliant for the West Indies again while the veteran Kemar Roach (3/30) continues to energise the West Indies with his spells. West Indies beat Pakistan by the barest of margins in a sensational finish in 1st test .

Set 168 to win, West Indies was rocked early by some brilliant fast and swing bowling by left armer Shaheen Afridi who reduced the hosts to 16/3.

Subsequently, Roston Chase and Blackwood had a superb partnership of 68 runs and looked to have calmed the nerves in the West Indies dressing room. However, seamer Faheem Ashraf extracted enough grip off the surface to get Chase (21) & Mayers (0) caught by the brilliant Imran Butt in the slips to leave the hosts tottering at 92/5.

Jermaine Blackwood’s superb 55 laced with sparkling strokeplay finally ended at 111/6 when Imran Butt took a spectacular one-handed diving catch off Hassan Ali off a drive to rekindle Pakistan’s hopes which extended further with a superb leg cutter from Hassan Ali to rattle Holder’s (16) stumps. West Indies are now 114/7 with 54 to get and 3 wickets in hand. Advantage Pakistan.

Joshua D Silva & Roach took the score to 142 under extreme tension before Afridi had D Silva (13) caught behind. Soon Roach hit a pull shot in the air but Hassan Ali at deep mid-wicket spilled it to break Pakistan’s hearts .

It was not yet over as Mohammed Rizwan ran all the way backwards to the boundary to take a spectacular catch off Warrican to leave the hosts at 151/9 with 17 to get !! What a turnaround again. !!

However, Roach (30not out) shepherded the last wicket pair shielding Seales (2 not out ) as West Indies scrambled home to a sensational 1 wicket win when all 3 results including a tie was possible.

Heroic bowling by Shaheen Afridi (4/50) and Hassan Ali (3/37) but it was not to be for Pakistan.

Seales for his 8 wickets in the test was the player of the match

Hassan Ali who dropped that catch was inconsolable as Pakistan were gutted but the West Indies were over the moon.
Indeed a test match for the ages  !!
