India’s greatest ever batsman  Sachin Tendulkar played many brilliant innings during his career but 14th August will always be special for him. On this day at the age of 17 ,  Sachin scored the first century of his Test career exactly 32 years ago today (14 August 2022).  He scored a century in the Test match played in Manchester and played an important innings for India.  This match played against England was a draw.  Sachin’s innings played an important role in the draw after India appeared to be in trouble on the final day of the test .

Under the captaincy of Mohammad Azharuddin, the Indian team toured England in 1990.  During this time, the second match of the Test series was played in Manchester’s Old Trafford after India lost the first test.   England scored 519 runs in the first innings and 320 runs of 4 declared  in the second innings.  While India scored 432 runs in the first innings courtesy a brilliant 179 from skipper Mohammed Azharuddin , 93 from Sanjay Manjrekar and a polished 68 from Tendulkar .  England skipper Graham Gooch set a target of 408 runs in the second innings for India.

India were rattled in their second innings and with still a large part of the fifth day to go , they slumped to 127/5 with both Manjrekar and Azharuddin gone . Tendulkar was battling away and had a good 56 run stand with Kapil Dev who got out after making 26 to leave India at 183/6 and in big danger of losing .

However  , Sachin stayed unruffled .  He scored an unbeaten 119 off 189 balls.  17 fours were included in Sachin’s innings.  The important aspect was that he came to bat at number 6 and was playing with a strong hold on one end.  After Kapil was out Sachin got a strong partner in Manoj Prabhakar who batted solidly and used his experience of opening the batting in the past. While Prabhakar batted solidly and sensibly,  Sachin showed unbelievable maturity beyond his age of 17 years and showed great technique and temperament to negotiate the increasingly dangerous England bowling attack . As he grew in confidence, he played some cracking shots and together with Prabhakar (67no) took India to safety as the match ended with India 343/6 and both Sachin and Prabhakar finishing an unbeaten stand of 160 runs .

Thus the first ever test hundred of Sachin Tendulkar helped India to draw the Manchester test in 1990 .
