Virat Kohli wants to be an opener
Captain of Team India, Virat Kohli came as an opening batsman in the last T20I against England. He paired with Rohit Sharma who is an experienced opening batsman and both the players strategically steered the team to 224 runs. Kohli did not take the lead in the beginning and let Sharma play his game. Rohit Sharma hammered 64 runs off 34 balls. Once Kohli had settled in the middle, he took charge now and slammed 80 runs off 52 balls, also remained not out till the end. Thus, team India built the humongous score of 224 for 8 in 20 overs.
No guarantee whether the same combinations would continue
Now that the skipper has tasted how it feels to be the opening batsman, he has expressed his desire to play as an opening batsman in the T20 World Cup. He enjoyed opening the match but there is no guarantee that the batting order that is being predicted would be carried to the World Cup.
Kohli said that the combinations that play on the field are not decided by the selectors as team management doesn’t have any role in the selection of players. He also said that Rohit Sharma was right to call this partnership a strategic move. The effects of these two legendary batsmen playing together have registered but there is no guarantee that the same combination would be played in the World Cup. It would become clearer closer to the World Cup.
Kohli to open a slot for Suryakumar Yadav
But one clear thing is Kohli’s wish to open the match. He said that he is going to pay as an opening batsman for his team Royal Challengers Bangalore in the IPL. It is going to be a practice session for the skipper. He wants to keep all the options open and needs to understand his role as an opener.
He seemed inspired by Suryakumar Yadav and said that if Surya could bat like that, he should also be able to play at any position in the team and he wants to work in that direction. If Virat Kohli wants to be an opener, there would be room for Yadav to play in the middle order. And this is what the captain intends.
The captain is still keeping an open mind and said that the best time to talk about this would be ahead of the World Cup. It would surely be interesting to watch how Virat Kohli wants to be an opener and Kohli goes about his job as an opener in the IPL.
Now, team India is all set to play the 3-match ODI series against England. The first match is scheduled to take place on Tuesday. Kohli must be waiting to experiment a little more and be better prepared for the bigger event.
