After India vs England Test series, players are getting ready for the T20 series which consists of 5 matches. Apart from the players that are surely going to be a part of the squad, there are some who have to struggle to make a place for themselves. Varun Chakravarthy is one such player who desperately wants to be a part of the playing squad but his inability to clear the fitness test is standing in the way of his success. The advantage of Chakravarthy’s failure is going to T Natarajan who seems to be in a much better condition than Chakravarthy and is working on being battle-ready. This readiness of Natarajan is going to cost Chakravarthy, at least, the early matches of the five-match T20 series.
Chakravarthy has been taking fitness test at National Cricket Academy, NCA, repeatedly. But even after regular attempts at clearing this test, he has not been successful. Natarajan, though in the race, also doesn’t have a fixed place in the team due to his “shoulder niggle”.
NOT PLAYED ANY MATCH SINCE OCTOBER
Varun Chakravarthy could not be a part of the Australia tour because of his shoulder injury but he was ready for the T20 series, as per a senior BCCI official. He said, “…he recovered from the shoulder injury that ruled him out of Australia series. He did his rehab at the NCA and started throwing normally.” But now the problem is his failure to “clear the YoYo-test mark stipulated for a 2-km run at least twice.”
One more question arises about the contemplation of Chakravarthy’s name for the squad. This player has not played any match for his state team since October but the officials say that the reason was his injury. A source said that he was in the rehab during Mushtaq Ali Trophy but “didn’t play any Vijay Hazare Trophy game. How do you assess his match fitness based on the games that he played five months back?” No doubt he is a good bowler but that cannot be the only criteria for the selection.
AS OTHERS WAIT IN LINE
Rahul Chahar will also be inducted into the squad as he is already in the bio-bubble. Natarajan is also in the race as the NCA is trying its best to get him fit for the series. Rahul Tewatia is also training for the series with the Indian team in Ahemdabad as he waits for his second fitness test result.
