New Delhi: The final match of the national one-day championship for the Vijay Hazare Trophy between Uttar Pradesh and Mumbai will be played at the Arun Jaitley Cricket Stadium, Delhi on Sunday. Uttar Pradesh will face the challenge of curbing the bat of Mumbai captain Prithvi Shaw, who is in superb form.
Shaw has so far scored 754 runs in seven matches of the tournament including an unbeaten 105, an unbeaten 227, an unbeaten 185 and 165 runs and will also be eyed by the national selectors. If Rohit Sharma takes rest, he could get a chance in the series of three ODIs against England. It is not yet clear whether this will happen or not.
The 21-year-old Shaw has taken his lessons on and off the field, helping him to consistently perform well in the championship. The national selectors cannot ignore him for a long time as his performance on the domestic circuit is not the answer.
At the same time, Uttar Pradesh team’s young captain Karan Sharma has done well under the guidance of coach Gyanendra Pandey. Left-arm fast bowler Yash Dayal will try to upset Shaw with his inswinger in the final.
Shaw holds the record for the highest individual score in the tournament. Due to his great performance, the rest of Mumbai’s batsmen did not have to do much but they would also like to prove their usefulness. These include Yashasvi Jaiswal, Sarfaraz Khan, Aditya Tare, Shams Mulani and Shivam Dubey. If Shaw fails, one of them will have to play the role of the innings. Among bowlers, Dhawal Kulkarni has taken 14 wickets. Tusshar Deshpande and spin trio Prashant Solanki, Tanush Kotian and Shams Mulani have also done well.
The Uttar Pradesh team, which defeated Gujarat by five wickets, reached the final for the third time. For them, the performances of Karan, wicketkeeper Upendra Yadav and veteran Akshdeep Nath will be important.
Mumbai has won the title thrice and the last time it was won in 2018-19. Shaw’s team would like to end the season with a win.
