Umesh Yadav take U-turns in his interview about the role of coach during international match
Umesh Yadav was the highest wicket-taker in India’s outstanding Oval test victory. He took 6/136 in the match and took 3 wickets in each innings.
After India was bundled out for 191 in the first innings, it was Bumrah who got the early breaks for India by getting both the openers. But Joe Root was batting effortlessly and looked as if he will torment India again. However, just before close on that first day, Umesh Yadav provided the huge break for India. Arguably the biggest moment of the game by getting Root bowled through the gate by an incutter. Had Root survived that moment, he would have made India suffer on a fine batting pitch and England would have got a huge first innings score like Leeds and shut India out of the match and the series.
Umesh went on to take 2 more wickets early on the second day. Before England fought back to take a crucial 99 run first-innings lead. Umesh Yadav take U-turns in his interview about the role of coach during international match.
After Indian batsmen combined well to put on 466 on the board in the second innings to set up a challenging target. England openers showed promise with a 100 run partnership but once the first wicket fell. The rest followed at regular intervals and Umesh contributed with 3/60 in the second innings as the Indian bowling attack showed its ruthless streak again.
After the match, Umesh spoke to the Hindi commentary team. Where Ashish Nehra and Virender Sehwag asked him a couple of questions.
In an answer to Nehra’s question, Umesh spoke about captain Kohli’s support. The encouragement when he was ask to get ready for the test match. Which he was expecting also as with back to back tests its difficult for the fast bowlers to sustain the same intensity. Hence bowlers had to be res for a game or two in order to get fresh ones to play. He said Kohli told him to follow all the processes he did at practice. To another Nehra’s question about Bumrah, Umesh said that it is up to the team management to decide whether Bumrah will play in the final test or not since he has already played back to back tests. However, he is in great rhythm and it will be good for India if he plays in the final test.
However, the most interesting question was asked by Sehwag regarding. Whether Umesh was missing the absence of the head coach and the bowling coach who are in quarantine due to the covid positive case of Ravi Shastri.
Umesh answered Sehwag by saying that yes. It did look odd that the head and the bowling coach was not around. However they always have discussions in the evenings after the game on bowling strategy. Umesh however added that as international players playing the game for so many years. Bowlers themselves have a fair idea of how to bowl and what skills to use in different situations of the game. And the coaches are just there for support.
Thus in a way, Umesh indicated that though coaches are important to the team. It is not as if the bowlers looked out of plans and they have enough experience to carry themselves in the absence of coaches.
That was a very frank statement from the Indian fast bowler.
The final test at Manchester will begin on 10 September with India 2-1 up on the series.
