Top 5 Indian wicket-takers against New Zealand in Tests
Bowlers win test matches and India’s chances against New Zealand in the World Test Championships final will highly depend on their bowling attack which is arguably the best in the world. Top 5 Indian wicket-takers against New Zealand in Tests.
While the Indians prepare for the world test Championships final let us look at the top 5 wicket-takers of India against New Zealand. And the most intriguing fact is that the top four highest wicket-takers from India in this list are all spinners.
Bishan Singh Bedi
One of the most key figures in the famed Indian spin quartet of the 1970s and a former Indian captain. Bedi played 12 tests between 1968 to 1976 and took 57 wickets at 19.14 average with 6/42 as his best bowling figures. His skilful left-arm spin with subtle variations was too much for the New Zealand batting lineup of the 1970s.
Bedi’s partner in crime Prasanna was one of the prime off-spinners in 1970s. The Karnataka born engineer by profession was another success story against the Kiwis. Taking 55 wickets in 10 tests at 20 average with 8/76 as his best. With Bedi and other contemporary spin legends, he underlined the Kiwi weakness against spin.
India’s all-time highest wicket-taker in test cricket is at number three with 50 test wickets in 11 tests at 26 average and 6/67 as his best, hounding the Kiwi batters from 1994 to 2003. Kumble’s tight lengths and accuracy were too much for the kiwi batters, especially in the subcontinent.
Ashwin is the best in terms of strike rate (33 balls per wicket) against New Zealand out of all the Indian bowlers. Between 2012 till date Ashwin took a staggering figure of 48 wickets in just 6 tests at an average of 17 with 7/59 as his best. The current New Zealand lineup will be wary of Ashwin. As he prepares for the WTC finals as in terms of strike rate he is a terror to the Kiwi batting lineup.

Finally a fast bowler in the list. Zaheer played 13 tests against New Zealand and took 47 wickets at 31 average and 5/29 as his best.
One surprising name absent in the top 5 list is that of Kapil Dev. The second all-time highest wicket-taker of India and the legendary allrounder had a rather under par record against New Zealand compared to other big countries. He took only 25 wickets in 10 tests at 34 on average.
From the current group of Indian fast bowlers, Ishant Sharma boasts a great record against the Kiwis, having snared 35 wickets in just 7 tests at 24 average.
