IPL is in its 13th year now and it has witnessed some sensational T20 knocks by some of the greatest legends of this format. Those knocks have seen some outrageous strokeplay never witnessed in cricket before. The list of the Top 5 highest scores by batsmen in IPL history is as under.
Chris Gayle 175* v PWI – 2013
Fittingly Chris Gayle has the honour of holding the record of highest T20 score in IPL. What an innings it was by the lefthander for RCB against Pune Warriors India when he plundered an unbeaten 175 runs off 66 balls, which included 13 fours and 17 mighty sixes !! The sixes were brutal hits down the ground as well as over deep midwicket, squarely and long leg regions. He achieved two records in this match for the highest individual score and most sixes by a player in T20 cricket.
Brendon McCullum 158* v RCB – 2008
The IPL was kick off in the inaugural year in the very first match by this Kiwi opener. Who set the ground ablaze for KKR with a breathtaking 158 runs off 73 balls against RCB, studded with 13 sixes and 10 fours. His on-side hits were brutal on the smaller ground of Chinnaswamy. He was no less on the offside either unfurling powerful drives & cuts. McCullum was the first player to score over 150 runs in the T20 format. He held the record of the highest individual score for more than five years before Gayle broke it.
AB de Villiers 133* v MI – 2015
RCB’s ‘360 degree batsman’ got his highest score of 133 runs off 59 balls, with a strike rate of 225.42, against Mumbai Indians. AB’s magnificent hundred included 19 fours and 4 sixes. Coming at 20/1. Devilliers after a steady start changed gears rapidly and plundered runs against arguably the best bowling attack in the IPL. He took both Pandya and Bumrah to the cleaners, sweeping the latter for 6s over deep square leg nonchalantly. Smashed lots of 4s through the covers. Played a brilliant inside out shot off Malinga over cover after sweeping him outrageously. It was a brutal innings.
KL Rahul 132* v RCB – 2020
The Punjab captain scored 132 not out off just 69 balls against RCB. Rahul’s stunning century was studd with 14 fours and 7 sixes. It was an innings full of sublime shots based on pure timing rather than power and was soothing to the eye. Punjab Kings crushed RCB in that game on basis of that innings.
AB de Villiers 129* v Gujarat Lions- 2016
Another AB de Villiers special and this time he was involve in a big 229 stand with Kohli who scored 109. De Villers remained unbeaten on 129 to help RCB to 248/3 against Gujarat Lions. AB’s scintillating innings included 10 fours and 12 sixes. As he was murderous towards the end of the innings putting the game out of Gujarat’s reach.
