5 Bhuvneshwar Kumar 6/82 at Lords 2014
Bhuvneshwar Kumar with his ball swinging skills is tailormade for English conditions. After India scored 295 in the first innings, Bhuvneshwar bowled superbly moving the ball around to get top-order players out. His scalps included Cook, Robson, Gary Ballance ( who scored 110), Ian Bell, Ben Stokes and Stuart Broad thus limiting England’s lead to only 24. It went a long way in winning India the test match with Ishant Sharma running havoc in 2nd innings.
4 Chetan Sharma 6/58 Birmingham 1986
In the victorious 1986 series, Chetan Sharma was India’s outstanding bowler taking 16 wickets in just 2 tests. At Edgbaston in the 3rd test, he bowled at a lively pace in the 2nd innings and got enough swing to rattle the England batting lineup and put India in a winning position for a series whitewash. However, the match was drawn. Sharma took 10 wickets in that test.
BS Chandrasekhar 6/38 at Oval 1971
Probably the most memorable bowling spell by any Indian in England leading to their historic first-ever test series win in England. India were 71 runs in arrears in the first innings but Chandra produced one of his most magical spells to blow away England for 101 in the 2nd innings. The English batters could not read his pace variations, googlies, leg-spin & flippers. Banking on Chandra’s spell India went on to win the test and the series.
2) Amar Singh – 6/35 Lords 1936
In the first Test of India tour of England in 1936. The visitors scored only 147 runs in the first innings. In response, the English team was dismissed for 134 runs as Amar Singh pick up 6 wickets for 35 runs. England won this Test eventually chasing the target of 107 runs in the final innings but Amar Singh’s spell remained a memorable one.
1. Ishant Sharma 7/74 Lords 2014
This was in the same match in which Bhuvneshwar got his 6/82. England was set a winning target of 319 and were 173/4 at one stage in the 4th innings before Ishant Sharma with his pace. Bounce and accuracy totally dismantled the England lower order. He got many wickets with lethal short balls as the English batters failed to keep down their shots. It was a hostile spell that won the 1st test for India in style by 95 runs. This till date remains the best bowling figures by an Indian in England.
