Batting 1st Australia made 241/7 on a slowish pitch where the Sri Lankan spinners dominated putting a check of the aggressive instincts of Australian batters . Muralitharan , Dharmasena , Jayasurya and Aravinda D Silva bowled right lengths to frustrate the Aussies with D Silva getting 3/42. For Australia , Mark Taylor (74) and Ricky Ponting (45) played well but could not dominate the bowling .

In reply Sri Lanka batted magnificently and even after the early losses of both aggressive openers  Kaluwitarna and Jayasurya their numbers 3 and 4 batted solidly. Gurusinha scored 65 and Aravinda D Silva batted with composure and resilience coupled with brilliant strokeplay to score a dazzling 107 notout and was there till the end when brilliant captain Arjuna Ranatunga (47 notout) who hit the winning runs for a great Sri Lankan win by 7 wickets .   DSilva was the man of the match as Ranatunga was presented the World Cup by the then Pakistan Prime Minister Benazir Bhutto .
