Indian batting legend Sunil Gavaskar was facilitated by BCCI in the Narendra Modi stadium today on completing 50 years of his test debut . He was handed over momentos by BCCI secretary Jay Shah to celebrate his test debut in West Indies which happened in 6th March 1971. That series proved to be a roaring success for Sunny as he totalled a massive 774 runs in 8 innings of 4 tests that he played in that series at a stunning average of 154.80. He scored 124 & 220 in the 4th test fighting an acute toothache . Those 774 runs in a debut series is still a world record .
Sunny continued his great career for 16 years becoming the mainstay of Indian batting and providing belief to other aspiring batsmen from India over the years through his flawless technique and temperament , that one can play fast bowling well in overseas conditions .
With 34 test hundreds and 10122 runs at 51 average , Gavaskar was the 1st ever batsman to breach the barrier of 10000 test runs and was the batting role model on which the subsequent greats Tendulkar , Dravid shaped their careers .
Thus it was a great gesture on the part of BCCI to faciltate the Indian batting legend , who became the batting model for future generation Indian batsmen.
