Shaw & Paddikal to stay back for Srilanka series
In a significant step, BCCI has overruled the request from the Indian team management for the England test series. Retained both Prithvi Shaw and Devdutt Paddikal for the Srilanka white ball series.
A request was earlier send by the team think tank in England to the chief selector Chetan Sharma asking Shaw and Paddikal to be flown to UK immediately after Shubman Gill was rule out due to injury. The Indian management in England was not considering KL Rahul anymore as an opener. And was apparently not impress with the standby opener Abhimanyu Easwaran’s performance at the nets.
However, sources in BCCI was not apparently happy with the request of the team management. As they feel that KL Rahul can still be tried as an opener. In case the existing partnership of Mayank or Rohit struggles and Easwaran. Who was sent as a standby opener should first deserve a chance before any verdict is pass on him. Moreover, there is no guarantee that Shaw who did not play any red-ball cricket post Australia tour. Will be a success in the challenging conditions in England.
Hence both Shaw and Paddikal will complete the Srilankan tour and any decision for sending them to England will be taken post the Srilanka series which ends on July 25.
The India vs England test series will start from August 4, 2021 onwards.
