Shaw & Dhawan destroy CSK bowling
Delhi Capitals , one of the pre tournament favourites in IPL 2021 announced themselves very strongly in their first match beating Chennai Super Kings effortlessly at the end by 7 wickets with Prithvi Shaw smashing a brutal 72 off 38 balls and Dhawan scoring 85. Shaw & Dhawan destroy CSK bowling
Sent in to bat first, CSK lost both their openers rapidly but Suresh Raina (54 off 36 balls ) took the attack to the opposition bowlers in the company of Moeen Ali (36 off 24 balls) who also played some impressive shots.
Raina after playing the first few balls looked in ominous touch , striking the ball with power and timing and hitting some massive sixes against spinners using his feet beautifully. His 53 run stand with Moeen after 7/2 brought CSK right back into the match . After Moeen departed to a great catch by Dhawan, Rayudu (23) played a fluent cameo and had a 62 run stand with Raina but his and Raina’s dismissal in quick succession brought Delhi back in reckoning. However Jadeja (26no) and Sam Curran (34 off 15 balls) took CSK to an imposing 188/7 . Sam Curran was especially brutal against his brother Tom Curran playing for Capitals hitting him for some glorious sixes in his spectacular innings.
For Delhi , Woakes (3/18) and Avesh Khan (2/23) playing ahead of senior Indian bowlers Ishant Sharma and Umesh Yadav were the most successful bowlers while Ashwin (1/47) had a poor day along with Tom Curran (1/40).
Chasing 189 , Prithvi Shaw exploded like fire crackers as Delhi raced away to a rapid start in powerplay overs and were scoring at 10 plus per over. Dhawan also started to time the balls beautifully and Delhi were racing along.
Shaw after his recent fabulous show in Vijay Hazare trophy carried forward his form and was playing stunning shots all round the ground with power and timing. There were also many classy shots using his wrists to find the gaps with ease . The CSK bowlers were carted around by both Shaw and Dhawan both of whom played pure cricket shots and was helped by a great outfield which gave value for good shots . It was clear that the CSK bowlers was going to struggle on a faster Wankhede pitch which tend to favour fast bowlers. Shardul Thakur was taken to the cleaners and others struggled too .
Finally when both Shaw (72) and Dhawan (85) were dismissed , Delhi were already in cruise control and thus Pant (15no) and Stoinis (14) completed the formalities.
It was a match which provided spectacular strokeplay from both sides . Delhi were without some of their key first XI players like Rabada , Nortje and Axar , hence they started creditably.
CSK needs to improve their bowling whilst their batting looked pretty good .
