Shardul Thakur likely to miss Lords test with hamstring issue
With 24 hours left for the Lords test, Virat Kohli’s committed formula of 4 paces 1 spinner might take a big blow as Shardul Thakur is suffering from a hamstring niggle and therefore is likely to miss the 2nd test.
Thakur bowled the least number of overs amongst the fast bowlers. At Trent Bridge and was brought in sparingly in the 2nd innings. He did get 4 wickets in the test but with his apparent injury, the Indian think tank will have to rethink its priorities.
Umesh Yadav and Ishant Sharma are the other bowling options. But including either of them will reduce the batting depth with the Indian middle-order going through some self-doubts. Hence it is highly likely that Ashwin gets back into the XI as a spin-bowling allrounder.
Meanwhile, ominous signs in England camp. After Broad’s injury issue, James Anderson has missed practice on the eve of the Lords test with a quad muscle niggle. A decision on his inclusion will be taken tomorrow. England has called up Saqib Mahmood, who has impressed in the ODIs vs Pakistan , as the cover for Anderson. Shardul Thakur likely to miss Lords test with hamstring issue.
Further, in order to bolster the fragile batting lineup in an effort to provide more support for Root. England has also called up Moeen Ali in the squad for the Lords test. Moeen can also provide the off spin option.
The 2nd test begins on 12 August at 3.30 PM IST and will be viewed on Sony network.
