The Sehwag like aggression and the Ganguly like elegance was all in display today as the Indian women openers , the belligerent Shafali Verma & the elegant Smriti Mandhana combined together to ensure an easy 9 wicket consolation win for India in the 3rd T20I after Rajeshwari Gayakwad’s accuracy had the Proteas in a tailspin .
Batting1st today , the South African girls were kept in a tight leash by the Indian bowling led by Arundhati Reddy and Rajeshwari Gayakwad . The latter was extremely accurate bowling stump to stump and had the impatient South African batting falling to lack of pace in the deliveries as wickets tumbled one after another. Only captain Suun Lewis (28) and Lara Goodall (25) showed some aggression but their contributions were not enough today as South Africa could manage only 112/7 in 20 overs.
In reply Shafali Verma came out all guns blazing as she ripped apart the Protea bowling attack and send them to all parts of the ground with brutal strokes. Using her strong wrists and timing she plundered runs at will as India rapidly moved towards the target. Skipper Mandhana played without pressure and found her gifted timing and gaps in the field with ease as she scored an elegant unbeaten 48 off just 28 balls but the cynosure of all eyes was player of the match Shafali with her Sehwag-like attitude. Some of her lofted shots down the ground reminded of the legend and she plundered runs at will scoring 60 off 30 balls and India finally completed the win in 11 overs by 9 wickets.
However the win came one day too late as South Africa won the series 2-1 by virtue of winning first two games.
India , inspite of today’s convincing win needs to sharpen their bowling and fielding efforts .
