Saqlain Mushtaq still in awe of Sehwag’s feats
One of the finest spinners in Pakistan’s history, Saqlain Mushtaq still in awe of Sehwag’s feats. The skilful off-spinner. Who was virtually the inventor of the ” Doosra” has been at the receiving end of some of the greatest innings from the ” Nawab of Nazafgarh “. It may be recalled that Saqlain was in the Pakistan XI. When Sehwag scripted his history-making triple hundred at Multan in 2004. In that innings Sehwag smashed Saqlain for a huge six over mid-wicket to reach his 300. That innings alone led the foundation of India’s first-ever test series win in Pakistan.
Saqlain is totally awed by Sehwag’s strike rates in all the three formats, 82 in tests , 104 in ODIs and 145 in T20Is . The off-spinner feels that Sehwag totally changed the landscape of Indian cricket with his belligerent batting style while opening in test cricket. He set the tone of the matches which made life much easier for the batsmen to come.
“Keep in mind that the impact Virender Sehwag had on the world, the style in which he played, the brand of cricket he played, a lot of players from India benefitted from it. The manner of batting he showed the world changed Indian cricket’s mindset and that of its cricketers,” Saqlain said.
Saqlain further mentioned that Rohit Sharma got success. As he followed the template of cricket which Sehwag had set with his aggressive batting. While he accepted that Rohit has a better record, Saqlain credited much of Rohit’s success to Sehwag’s exploits before him.
Saqlain credited Sehwag for changing the thought process of players after him and added that before Viru. Only one or two batsmen like Viv Richards and Zaheer Abbas resorted to this aggressive brand in ODIs.
