Sammy thought of leaving cricket when he saw Lara unconscious
Darren Sammy, the twice T20I world cup winning West Indies captain recalled a grim incident early in his career which created doubts in his mind about continuing with cricket.
Sammy recalled an incident in the 2004 Champions trophy when Shoaib Akhtar was bowling to Brian Lara at searing pace and hit him a gruesome blow on the lower back of his head which made him almost unconscious for several moments on the ground.
Sammy thought of leaving cricket when he saw Lara unconscious. This led to the whole West Indies dressing room and the opposition players on the ground very worried for few moments and 19 year old Sammy was sitting and watching the match with Dwyane Bravo at the instant.
Sammy, who played 232 internationals for West Indies across all formats, asked Shoaib recently of that incident and was told by the fast bowler that Lara had hit him for 4 down leg side in the previous ball and so he wanted to counter him with a bouncer.
Sammy added that he absolutely loved watching the ” Rawalpindi Express” coming into bowl with his hair flying, his extreme pace. He further said that now even if he is retired. He is ready to pad up against any current day bowler and hit them out of the ground .
