SA v WI T20I: Brilliant all round show win South Africa the series 3-2

The highly exciting T20I series between West Indies and South Africa ended in favour of the visitors after a gripping 5th match. It has once again been prove that having an array of brilliant stroke players in the batting lineup does not guarantee winning big events. Good bowling attack and strong temperament are also highly required to win a close series which was very well showcase by the Proteas.

Batting first South Africa’s innings was built on a brilliant 128 run stand for the 2nd wicket in 14 overs by Quinton De Kock and Aiden Markram after Bavuma was dismiss by Fidel Edwards for a duck. SA v WI T20I: Brilliant all round show win South Africa the series 3-2.

De Kock almost singlehandedly carried the South African batting in this series. Today in the decider he again looked awesome with his predominantly legside shots despatching anything off line. Today he found a great ally in Markram who played sparking shots all round the wicket and timed them superbly.

It looked as if the West Indies might get 180. However shrewd bowling by Bravo, Edwards and McCoy halted South African progress with De Cock (60) and Markram (70) falling in quick succession.

David Miller’s run a ball 18 took South Africa to 168/4 in 20 overs. For the home side, Fidel Edwards (2/19) was the most successful bowler.

West Indies started in quick fashion with Evin Lewis in menacing touch taking on the Protea bowlers. However, South Africa stayed in the game with cheap wickets of Simmons(3) and Gayle (11). The big blow came when a rampaging Lewis (57) holed out in the deep off Ngidi. Hetmyer (33) played a well-controlled knock but West Indies were badly rattled by the consecutive cheap dismissals of Pollard (13) and Russell (0) to Wiaan Mulder. Pooran (20) tried to repair the damage but once he was caught off a skier. It was all over for the West Indies with South Africa winning the match by 25 runs and wrapping up a well earned 3-2 win in the series.

The Protea bowlers bowled to a plan. Both Rabada (2/24) and Ngidi (3/32) kept getting crucial breakthroughs and Shamsi in the middle overs was excellent (1/11 in 4 overs ). Above all Mulder (2/31) playing for Nortje in this game turned the match with the wickets of Pollard and Russell.

Markram for his brilliant 70 off 48 balls was the man of the match while Shamsi for his outstanding bowling in the series got the player of the series award.

Overall , it was an excellent result for South Africa , who were the underdogs in this series. And was contesting a team regarded as the favourites of T20I World cup 2021, at their home conditions.
