Root overtakes Aussie pair to shoot up to 2nd spot in ICC test batting rankings
Joe Root is in sublime form since the start of 2021 smashing daddy hundreds in Sri Lanka and India and has continued his form in the current India v England series reeling off back to back hundreds at Nottingham and Lords and almost carrying a fragile batting lineup of England singlehandedly.
Though England lost the test, Root has gained more in his personal achievements by shooting up to the number 2 spot in the ICC world Test batting rankings and thereby pushing down the Aussie pair of Steve Smith and Marnus Labuschagne to 3rd and 4th spots respectively.
It may be mentioned that Australia did not play any Test cricket after their Gabba test against India last January. Hence Smith & Labuschagne did not have any test matches under their belt for the last 7 months.
Indian skipper Virat Kohli stayed at number 5 in the test rankings. While Rohit Sharma is at the 6th spot which is a huge improvement from the 54th spot two years ago. Opening the batting has totally changed Rohit’s test fortunes. Root overtakes Aussie pair to shoot up to 2nd spot in ICC test batting rankings.
The 7th to 10th spots are filled up by Rishabh Pant, Babar Azam, David Warner and Quinton De Kock in that order. While Kane Williamson continues to hold the top spot in the Test batting rankings.
In the bowling Test rankings, James Anderson and Jason Holder moved up to the 6th and 9th spots respectively. Pat Cummins continue to lead the bowling test rankings followed by Ravichandran Ashwin.
