Rohit Sharma, India’s one of the most popular current-generation cricketers celebrates his birthday today on 30 April. Always regarded as the most talented batsman of his generation, success never came easy to him due to his inconsistency in the early stages of his Indian career.

It all began in the T20 world cup in the match vs home team South Africa, getting in as a last-moment replacement for injured Yuvraj, Rohit scored a superb 50 in difficult conditions against a quality attack and India won that match on their historic march to the finals. In the high voltage final Rohit backed up Gambhir’s 75 with a superb 30 at the backend to take India to a competitive total and as it turned out, India beat Pakistan by only 5 runs to win the cup.

His ODI performances skyrocketed as he scored his first of his 3 ODI double hundreds against Australia in 2013 and followed in 2014 with the world record 264, the highest ever ODI score to date against Sri Lanka at Eden Gardens. His incredible strokeplay had the Eden gardens crowd on his feet . Another double ton he scored against Srilanka in 2017 to level the ODI series after a humiliating defeat in 1st ODI.

Rohit also started to taste success in IPL winning the trophy for Mumbai Indians in 2013 at Kolkata followed by another win in 2015 again at Kolkata. He has altogether won 5 IPL titles as MI captain and the 6th title with Deccan Chargers in 2009 under Gilchrist. His lone IPL century was also scored at Kolkata …what a love relationship he has got with Eden Gardens !!

Rohit, unfortunately, did not get selected in World cup 2011 . He played in World cup 2015 and had a decent tournament but his finest moment in ODI cricket was definitely his 5 world cup centuries in India’s campaign during the 2019 world cup in which India, unfortunately, crashed out in the semis. On some tough batting conditions in England, scoring 5 world cup 100s in a single edition is no mean feat. Rohit Sharma birthday special- A small tribute.

For all his successes he was having in white-ball formats, Rohit’s test career was not really taking off till he was asked to open in the home series vs South Africa in 2019 which followed a sequence of high scores. He scored a mammoth 529 runs in that series with a three figure average .

Having opened so successfully in ODIs, Indian team management took a lot of time to realise that Rohit can be tried as an opener in Test cricket and when it finally took effect he never looked back. He had a moderate test series in Australia in 2020-21 missing out on a big score after having great starts but made amends in the crucial home test series against England topping the Indian run aggregates in the series.

With 2615 test runs at 46 average in 38 tests and 7 centuries, Rohit looks on the verge of making it big in test cricket as an opener till he hangs up his boots.

As for his ODI record, they are outstanding with 9205 runs in 227 matches at 49 average and 29 hundreds with a strike rate of 88. His T20I strike rate is 138 with 4 centuries and 2864 runs at 32 average. He has also scored 5000 plus runs in IPL.

Rohit Sharma birthday special- A small tribute. Rohit always made batting look easy . His effortless and dazzling strokeplay endears him to his fans. He has a lot of time for his shots and plays the cuts and drives beautifully. He is an outstanding player of the pull and hook and is equally at ease against both pace and spin.

Rohit is 34 now and hopefully, he will entertain us for few more seasons with his outstanding batting skills.

As Rohit Sharma celebrates his 34th birthday, here’s wishing him great health and great success ahead.
