RCB v KKR 2011
In RCB v KKR 2011 mega auction Chris Gayle was bought by RCB and he thus moved to a new team from KKR. Thus lot of interest was created when RCB faced KKR at Eden Gardens in 2011 afternoon match as the eden gardens crowd was waiting to see whether Gayle fores against his own team.
In that IPL game KKR batted first and put up a formidable 171/5 with 40s from Kallis, new skipper Gambhir and Yusuf Pathan.
With 172 to win, RCB started in whirlwind fashion in powerplay with Dilshan and Gayle. Dilshan was the initial aggressor hitting a series of boundaries before Gayle opened up towards the 2nd half of powerplay. He mauled left armer Shakib for boundaries and huge sixes over midwicket as the crowd watched the Gayle power in amazement. RCB were nearly 60 within powerplay and the Gaylestorm continued !! Yusuf Pathan was clobbered for sixes over long off and fiercely cut boundaries while the pacers Balaji and Unadkat could not make any impression at all.
The Chris Gayle show continued even after Dilshan’s (38) dismissal as the bowlers were clobbered mercilessly while the ball was disappearing repeatedly into the crowd or over the fence.
Towards the end of the chase Virat Kohli tried to ensure that Gayle gets most of the strike to get to his 100. In the 18th over Kohli hit a full toss for 4 and looked apologetically to Gayle who was on 98 as the score reached 170. Next ball was a wide , so the score moved to 171 which means any extras conceded by KKR will deprive Gayle of his hundred. Kohli played the last ball of that over defensively and that enabled Gayle to thrash a four in next over and completed his blistering 100 in 51 balls to inflict a crushing 9 wicket defeat on his old franchisee KKR at their den.
It was brutal batting at it’s best and thus Gayle got his first of his many 100s in RCB colors studded with 10 fours and 7 blistering sixes and launched a great six year career with the franchisee.
