Ranatunga lebels the Indian squad touring Sri Lanka as “2nd level team”
Former Srilankan legend and World cup winning captain Arjuna Ranatunga was always known to attract controversy. During his playing days and the trend continues long after his retirement.
A couple of days back Ranatunga made another controversial comment. This time on the Indian squad which is currently touring Srilanka for the white ball series. He has termed the Indian squad as ” 2nd level” and slammed the Srilankan cricket board for undermining the dignity of the country and looking at only financial gains. Ranatunga lebels the Indian squad touring Sri Lanka as “2nd level team”.
“Sri Lanka may have gone down (in the rankings), but as a cricketing nation we have an identity. We have dignity, we should not be sending our best to play an Indian B team. The secret behind agreeing to an Indian B team is TV rights, the board wants to make money from this tournament. Even if it means pitching our players against a B team.” Ranatunga said.
Sri Lankan cricket authorities however refuted Ranatunga’s allegations; and strongly defended the Indian team stating that at least 14 out of the 20 squad members have already played for India in some format and it is not at all a B grade team.
There are at least 5 to 6 players in the Indian squad touring Srilanka who has already played test cricket with distinction along with other formats like skipper Shikhar Dhawan , vice captain Bhuvneshwar Kumar , Prithvi Shaw , Hardik Pandya and Kuldeep Yadav . Most of the others have played enough of ODI or T20I cricket or both . The Indian test squad is currently on a tour of England .
