Pujara & Rahane called up BCCI from England to discuss on Kohli’s captaincy
It appears that all was not well in Team India dressing room during and after the WTC final in June .
After New Zealand won the test on the reserve day beating India in the final session by 8 wickets , the Indian cricket fraternity was understandably gutted as India after leading the points table right through, could not win the final that mattered and therefore failed in another ICC event final stages .
The Indian captain Virat Kohli also was understandably disappointed . He spoke in the post match press conference about more intent from some of his batters and having a mindset of scoring runs rather than merely trying to survive as the bowlers will settle into a length against defensive minded approach and invariably make inroads .
From Kohli’s answers it clearly appeared that he was targeting his senior batters Pujara and Rahane . Pujara scored 8 off 54 and 15 off 80 in the two innings. While Rahane scored 49 off 117 and 15 off 40 in the final.
It is understood that after the presser. Kohli reportedly pulled up both Rahane and Pujara in the dressing room
Meanwhile, according to a report in New Indian Express. Both Pujara and Rahane after the incident had called up BCCI secretary Jay Shah from London and expressed their reservations on Kohli’s captaincy .
BCCI is understood to have taken feedback from other players. As well after that phone call and then decided that they will act appropriately on the same after the England tour is over .
Whether Virat Kohli had to relinquish the T20I captaincy as a result of the fallout of this issue or not is not known as he cited workload management etc . The question is how many T20I internationals are played by India in a year compared to tests and ODIs . There are also rumours that Kohli may be replaced. As the ODI captain as well and may be allowed to lead only in the test format.
The cricket fraternity in India will surely keep an eye in these developments on team India front going ahead .
