29 March 2004 was a momentous day in the history of Indian cricket .  India always had a batting tradition in their history and gave rise to many batting greats from the days of Hazare , Umrigar  and in last 50 years the greats like Gavaskar , Viswanath , Tendulkar , Dravid and Kohli in current generation.

However till 2003 , no Indian batsman managed a triple test hundred and the closest to the landmark was VVS Laxman in Kolkata 2001 when he got his famous 281 .

Finally , the honour of reaching the 1st ever triple hundred was bestowed on the most unlikeliest of batsmen . Not Tendulkar or Dravid but Virender Sehwag  who was the most aggressive Indian batsman ever to have played test cricket and opened the batting .

Viru was in amazing touch on 28 March 2004 when he started his innings as India batted first against Pakistan in their 1st test of the 2004 series .   He was in destructive form as he smashed around the Pakistan bowling attack led by fast and furious Shoaib Akhtar , Abdul Razzaq and Saqlain Mushtaq.  The dazzling cover drives and ferociously hit cut shots were thudding into the fence as Sehwag was destroying the Pakistan attack . His 100 came off an upper cut six off Shoaib Akthar . The Pakistani bowlers were at a loss where to pitch him the ball as he was toying with them . The spinners were sent to the cleaners with huge and long hits over midwicket for 6s . Sehwag was having a long 336 stand with Tendulkar (194) who himself was on the way to a hundred . He took a couple off Razzaq to complete his 200 . Had not been for Tendulkar ‘s insistence to control his strokes to play for stumps, Sehawg may have gone close to 300 or would have reached the landmark on same day.

However the great moment came on the 2nd day 29th March 2004 when he smote Saqlain over midwicket for a huge six inspite of their been a fielder stationed.  The world cricket was stunned at his audacity to take on the fielder to reach such an important landmark . It was a great moment for Indian cricket and took a long time to arrive . Finally Sehwag was out for 309.  India piled up 627 and made Pakistan follow on and finally won their 1st ever test on Pakistan soil by an innings .  And all this was responsible for the dazzling 309 by the ” Multan ka Sultan ” .
