New Zealand and Australia played out a thriller at Dunedin in the 2nd T20I of 5 match series in a match where 434 runs were scored and 31 sixes hit .
On a flat batting deck Martin Guptill got back into run scoring form with a destructive knock of 97 off 50 balls as the Kiwis were sent to bat first . After early exit of Seifert , Guptill and Williamson destroyed the Australian bowling on a small ground scoring at brisk rate . Both the players stuck to cricketing shots as the crowd was enthralled to see some magnificent T20 batting . Guptill drove on the ground and in the air with power and timing and anything short was fiercely pulled into the crowd . The Australian fast bowlers were clueless while bowling to him and were delighted when Guptill was out at 97 off just 50 balls . It was an innings that set up the game.
Williamson was almost unnoticed due to the brilliance of Guptill but he played superbly for 53 off 35 balls to set up the pace for Jimmy Neesham’s fierce leg side hitting in the last five overs. Neesham scored a whirlwind 45 off 16 balls with some brilliantly timed leg side flicks for 6s and took New Zealand to 219/7 off 20 overs . None of the Australian bowlers were spared in this innings with Kane Richardson getting 3 wickets but at high cost .
In reply Australia started encouragingly through Finch and Wade but both were dismissed after short cameos . Josh Phillipe in his 2nd T20I showed promise and looked good for a big score but his impressive innings was cut short at 45 as Mitchel Santner with his left arm spin got through the middle order with 3 quick wickets including Philippe and dangerman Maxwell (3) for another failure as Aussies slumped to 113/6 around 13 over mark .
With game slipping away Marcus Stoinis started his brutal hitting to get Australia back in the game and he was well supported by Daniel Sams who showed his hitting prowess as Australia staged a remarkable recovery in the last stages. Boundaries and sixes were flying around as the Kiwis looked in danger of losing the game . With Australia now within striking distance , the famous Boult – Southee combo came to the rescue of the home side yet again with good bowling in 18th and 19th overs breaking the Aussie momentum . Finally with 5 needed off last 5 , Jimmy Neesham just about managed to restrict the Aussies who fell short by 4 runs after heroic fightback by Stoinis ( 78 off 37 balls ) and Daniel Sam’s (41 off 15 balls)
