Sri Lanka has increased India’s anxiety by giving New Zealand a blow till stumps on the fourth day of the first Test match.  In fact, both India and Sri Lanka are eyeing the final of the World Test Championship.  It is necessary for India to win the Ahmedabad Test against Australia, but now that match seems to be a draw.  In such a situation, India will have to pray for Sri Lanka’s defeat against New Zealand, but on the fourth day, Sri Lanka has made the match very high voltage.

 Sri Lanka gave the host a target of 285 runs.  By the end of the fourth day’s play, Sri Lanka also took the crucial wicket of Devon Conway as New Zealand reached 28/1 at close . Sri Lanka needs 9 more wickets to win with a full day left.  At the same time, the Kiwi team needs 257 more runs to win.

 Sri Lanka started the fourth day playing ahead of 83 runs for 3 wickets and scored 302 runs in the second innings on the basis of Angelo Mathews’s century.  Mathews handled the faltering Sri Lankan innings and hit a superb 115 off 235 balls. Mathews played several good pull shots and drives through the off side as he piled on the runs in the company of  Dinesh Chandimal who scored  a sparkling 42 also full of pulls and flicks. However after Chandimal’s dismissal the Kiwi bowlers kept getting wickets at regular intervals

Dhananjay de Silva played a skilful innings and  scored 47 not out . Hos knock took Sri Lanka   to 302 before last man was dismissed.  For New Zealand  , Tickner took 4 wickets, Henry took 3 wickets  & Southee took 2 scalps . 


Before close Rajitha had Conway caught & bowled   to tattle the hosts but Latham & Williamson held on to stay till the close with New Zealand ending the day  on 28/1 .
