Kuldeep Yadav, the mystery spinner, once regarded as India’s first-choice spinner overseas, has experienced a big slump in his career in the last couple of years. It seemed that the turning point came in the match against RCB at Eden Gardens in 2019 when Virat Kohli and Moeen Ali smashed runs off his bowling reducing him to almost in tears.
Kuldeep who formed the famous duel in white ball cricket with Yazuvendra Chahal , has since 2019 has struggled to keep his spot in the Indian team as well as in KKR XI .
In a recent interview, the left-arm chinaman bowler exploded against the KKR management on his lack of getting games in recent seasons. He said that, unlike the Indian team management where one gets communicated for the reasons if not selected, the KKR team management does not communicate as to why the player is left out of a match. He also indicated that he was very disappointed to be left out so frequently in the last two seasons and team’s lack of faith in his skillsets inspite of his own feelings that he can win matches for his team.
“If the coaches have worked with you before and are with you for a prolonged period of time, they understand you better. But it becomes very difficult when the communication is weak. Sometimes you don’t even know that whether you will be playing or not, or what the team expects from you. Sometimes you feel that you are deserving to play, can win matches for the team, but you don’t know the reason why you are not playing. The management comes for 2 months with their plans, so that makes it difficult. I remember that I had spoken to the franchise before the IPL but in the matches that happened in the middle, nobody gave me an explanation. I was a bit shocked. I felt like there was no trust like they had no faith in my skill. This happens when the team has many options. KKR now has plenty of spin bowling options.” Kuldeep said
Kuldeep also suggested that having an Indian captain make things easier for having clear communication. After Eoin Morgan replaced Karthik as KKR captain, Kuldeep is unsure what Morgan thinks of him as there is no proper communication.
In 45 matches for KKR since 2014 , Kuldeep has taken 40 IPL wickets. He is already playing his 8th season for KKR.
It remains to be seen how KKR management will react to Kuldeep’s outburst. Already the team is languishing at the bottom of the league table as the IPL 2021 UAE leg is poised to start.
