KKR survives late batting catastrophe to scrape past Delhi Capitals & reach 3rd IPL final

From what looked an absolute cruise , KKR contrived to make it an absolute thriller before scraping through to a win off the penultimate ball of the match vs Delhi Capitals to reach IPL 2021 final in which they will face the formidable CSK in the final .

Sent in to bat first , Delhi Capitals batters  never really got into any momentum throughout their innings in the face of some superbly accurate bowling by the high quality KKR bowling attack .  Shaw (18) after starting promisingly missed a googly from Varun who later got Dhawan (36) ,caught superbly by Shakib at point. Stoinis’ comeback after injury was not a happy one as he was out for a quiet 18 playing on to the stumps off Mavi , who looked impressive today.

Pant (6) once again fell victim to a poor shot selection . Heytmer (17) started off with 2 towering sixes before getting runout and only Shreyas Iyer (30*) stayed till the end hitting the last ball of the innings from Mavi for a towering six to take the Capitals to 135/5 .  For KKR , Varun Chakravarthy was the pick of the bowlers with 2/26 , followed by Ferguson (1/26) and the other spinners who were also superb in executing their stills.

In reply KKR got of to a rapid start in the powerplay with both the openers, specially Venkatesh Iyer going ballistic  but at the sam time playing sensible cricket . They rattled up 95/0 in 12.2 overs as Delhi  Capitals bowling attack could not employ  the any grip on the match . One stepped out lofted shot by Venkatesh Iyer off Rabada was the shot of the match.

Venkatesh Iyer (55)  got out soon after completing his 50 trying to hook Rabada  after the long first wicket partnership. Gill and Rana settled down  and  looked well poised to take  the team over the line with plenty to spare . However at 123/1  ,Rana was caught in the deep trying to pull Nortje and that signalled a sensational collapse. Gill (46) was out next caught behind of Avesh Khan who bowled much better today after 2 disappointing games .

This brought in the 2 seniormost but off form players Dinesh Karthik and Eoin Morgan ,one the former captain ,other the current captain. All was needed to place ball into gaps and run hard for singles and twos but knockout game brought in a different kind of pressure, and the two experienced professionals failed to live upto their standing.  Karthik tried to take on the sheer pace of Nortje  and was bowled for 0 and Morgan (0) did no better and played on to Rabada , and Delhi were cock a hoop .

Now 7 runs was required in final over which was bowled by Ashwin and he was brilliant after having another disappointing outing till that moment . Ashwin kept the ball on the stumps and had a panicky Shakib sweeping and missing the line for lbw. Sunil Narine went to finish it with a six by was caught  by Axar at long on of next ball which crucially enabled Rahul Tripathi the last batter standing to get strike and off the next ball (with Ashwin on hattrick) , Tripathy (12*) hit a straight six down the ground to put KKR in the finals with a 3 wicket win and one ball to go !!

It was a catastrophic collapse by kkr . They were cruising at 123/1 with just 13 to get off 25 balls but still managed to lose 6 wickets for 7 runs in one of the most sensational collapse in any form of cricket across formats in the games history .

Delhi Capitals needs to to be commended on the way they hung on till the end and nearly pulled off a coup . Their bowlers were blunted by the KKR opening duo but they came back in sensational fashion to orchestrate a sensational collapse but just fell short . Venkatesh Iyer was the man of the match.

Thus it’s two times champion  KKR in their 3rd IPL final to meet formidable CSK  while Delhi Capitals like RCB continues to remain eluded from an IPL title .
