There has been lots of memorable innings in IPL history but none more impactful from the point of view of the event as a whole  than Brendon Mccullum’s destructive 100 in the first ever match in IPL history in 2008 .  The IPL phenomenon could not have got off to a more rousing start and even after 13 years of this event , that McCullum 100 still remains etched in the memory of cricket fans and experts alike.

The much awaited  1st ever IPL game was played between Kolkata Knight Riders led by Sourav Ganguly and Royal Challengers Bangaluru led by Rahul Dravid at Chinnaswamy stadium Bangalore . India has just won the first ever T20I World cup 6 months ago , hence the IPL event was followed with great interest and fanfare in 2008 and it grew into a lucrative event as years passed by.

KKR batted first, McCullum opened with skipper Ganguly and from the word go the Kiwi was at his destructive best . Well known for his aggressive batting at international level , McCullum simply took it to the next level that evening at  Chinnaswamy . Brutal strokeplay followed against a decent bowling attack of Pravin Kumar , Zaheer Khan , Noffke and Kallis . The Bangalore stadium has smaller boundaries but McCullum’s mighty sixes were going deep into the packed crowd.  Brutal pull & hook shots , midwicket hoicks , straight lofted shots over long off and long on , cuts over slips , sweeps and the authentic drives were all in display as it was McCullum show that night . He hit 158 off just 73 balls with 10 fours and 13 sixes !!  He had the crowd in raptures and the KKR owner Shahrukh Khan was seen  over the moon absorbing all the excitements on the balcony . It was such an impactful knock that other legends playing in that game for KKR — Ganguly and Ponting were completely dwafted. As it was, the  next highest score in that innings was 20 by Ponting as KKR piled on 222 in 20 overs.

For the record, RCB never knew how to chase down that mammoth score & they collapsed like a pack of cards to be 82 allout  with Agarkar , Dinda and Ishant Sharma destroying their batting.

Thus the Indian Priemer League got off to a sensational start in 2008 and Brendon McCullum’s name will forever remain in history for providing such a phenomenal start to the  13 year old popular event that has become the premier and most popular cricket event outside the white ball World cups
