IPL 2023 : Delhi Capitals make David Warner captain & an allrounder as vice captain

Just before the start of the 16th season of the Indian Premier League, Delhi Capitals have taken a big decision.  In the absence of Rishabh Pant, the command of the team has been given to David Warner.  Along with this, star all-rounder Axar Patel has been appointed as the vice-captain of the team.  Pant, who has been in charge of Delhi Capitals for the last 2 seasons, will not be able to be a part of the tournament this time due to an injury in an accident.

David Warner has been speculated to become the captain for the past few days.  Team director Sourav Ganguly also indicated that Warner should be made the captain.  After being handed the captaincy of Delhi Capitals, Warner said, “Pant has been a great leader for Delhi. We will miss Pant’s contribution. I am grateful for the trust the management has shown in me. For me to lead the team of young players.”  It’s a matter of pride.”

Rishabh Pant was seriously injured in a car accident on December 30, 2022, after which Team Delhi had to take this decision.  In the accident, Pant was injured on the forehead and his right knee had a ligament injury.  BCCI said in a statement that Pant has undergone surgery and will be away from cricket for at least 6 months.

In the last season i.e. 2022 under the captaincy of Pant, Delhi Capitals finished the season by being the fifth number in the league .  The team did not qualify for the playoffs.  Delhi won 7 out of 14 matches and got 14 points.  Pant was appointed as the captain of Delhi Capitals in IPL 2021.  He has captained a total of 30 matches in the IPL so far, in which his team has won 17 and lost 13.

This is not the first time that David Warner will take charge of Delhi.  This will be his second captaincy in Delhi.  He captained the team during his time with the then Delhi Daredevils between 2009 and 2013.  After this, he was bought by Sunrisers Hyderabad.  And a year later he was made captain.  In 2016, Warner led Sunrisers to the title.

Warner has captained a total of 69 matches in the history of IPL so far, in which the teams under his captaincy have won 35 matches and lost 33 matches.  That is, the winning percentage of any team under his captaincy is above 50.  Now we have to see what they can do for Delhi in IPL 2023.
