Once the IPL 2021 is completed in September, the 2022 edition will see a mega auction before it. There are also talks of having 10 teams from the 2022 edition
The franchisees are allowed up to 3 retentions. In addition, they are allowed to use the right to match card to buy back their ex-player by matching the winning bid of another franchise.
Let us look at the possible players teamwise, who might be bought back with the usage of the RTM card.
MI will like to retain Rohit Sharma, Jasprit Bumrah and Hardik Pandya. They will definitely go for Keiron Pollard and Krunal Pandya using the RTM card. Pollard is in MI since inception, so surely MI will go for him. Krunal has done wonders since he has stepped into the franchise as an uncapped player.
Chennai Super Kings
CSK will surely retain Dhoni ( if he plays in 2022), Raina and Jadeja. Hence they will look at Moeen Ali and Deepak Chahar for using the RTM card. Moeen has done well this season and Chahar is their dependable pacer in the powerplays.
Royal Challengers Bangalore
RCB will retain Virat ABD De Villiers as usual and is likely to use the RTM card for Glenn Maxwell and Devdutt Paddikal. Maxwell had his best IPL year this season since 2014 and Paddikal has gone from strength to strength. Harshal Patel also is a possible RTM candidate after his stellar shows this year.
With Kane Williamson, Rashid Khan and Jonny Bairstow the likely retainees, SRH may look at retaining David Warner judging by his past reputation and one between Bhuvneshwar Kumar or T Natarajan both of whom had average outings in IPL 2021.
If Rajasthan retains Buttler with Samson and Archer, they will go for Ben Stokes and Rahul Tewatia for the RTM. Else they will go for Buttler and Tewatia both of whom have done well in the last two seasons combined.
Kolkata Knight Riders
KKR has got the most complex issue since their performances in the last two seasons have been poor. Russell will be a sure shot retainee but not sure about the rest. They may use their RTM card for Nitish Rana and one between Pat Cummins or Sunil Narine.
Lots of players to choose from for Delhi. Shreyas Iyer and Rishabh Pant are expected to be retained along with maybe Shikhar Dhawan. Hence the franchise is sure to use their RTM card for Prithvi Shaw and Kagiso Rabada both of whom are assets for the Capitals.
Punjab is most likely to retain both KL Rahul and Mayank Agarwal. Hence they are most likely to use their RTM card for Chris Gayle and Ravi Bishnoi both of whom excelled for the franchise in the last two seasons.
However, with 31 matches for IPL 2021 to be completed in UAE from September onwards, we might see a few changes in the above equations going forward .
