India’s cricket fraternity hails historic Indian win in Thomas Cup badminton 2022

India’s men’s badminton team etched its name in the pages of history by winning the Thomas Cup title  for the first time by defeating 14-time champions Indonesia 3-0 in a one-sided final on Sunday.  India has been championed by Lakshya Sen, Satwik sairaj Rankireddy, Chirag Shetty and Kidambi Srikanth.  The Sports Ministry has announced a grant of Rs 1 crore to the Thomas Cup winning team.  At the same time, PM Modi also congratulated the winning team. The Indian cricket fraternity hailed this great historic win .

 As for the final , in the first match, world number 9 shuttler Lakshya Sen defeated world number four Anthony Sinisuka Ginting in the men’s singles category, while in the second match, the pair of Satwiksairaj Rankireddy and Chirag Shetty defeated Indonesia’s Kevin Sanjaya and Mohammad Ahsan in the men’s doubles.

 Satwiksairaj Rankireddy and Chirag Shetty defeated Indonesia’s Mohammad Ehsan and Kevin Sanjaya 18-21, 23-21 and 21-19 in the doubles match.  After falling behind in the first game, Satwik and Chirag made a thrilling comeback in the second game.  The second game was tied, but from here the Indian pair fought in their favor.  After this, the pair won the third game 21-19 and won the match 2-1.  With this win, India’s lead in the final has become 2-0.

 Struggling to find momentum in the knockout stage, Lakshya performed as expected in the most crucial bout as he bounced back from a loss in the first singles match to defeat world No. 5 Anthony Sinisuka Ginting 8-21 21-17 21-  Beating 16 gave India a 1-0 lead.


 The country’s top men’s doubles pair of Satwik and Chirag then came back from adversity to save four match points in the second game to beat the pair of Mohammad Ahsan and Kevin Sanjay Sukamuljo 18-21 23-21 21-19.  Made the lead 2-0.  In the second singles, Srikanth put up a stellar performance to beat Asian Games gold medalist Jonathan Christie 21-15 23-21 in straight games in 48 minutes to give India a 3-0 lead.

The Indian cricket fraternity was thrilled at the brilliant historic win by the badminton team . It was a win over 14 times champion Indonesia  and it stands alongside the hockey and cricket world cup wins of 1975 and 1983 respectively  .
