India B team too good for Srilanka in 1st ODI
A strong team performance with both bat and ball helped India to outplay Srilanka in the 1st ODI of the 3 match series at Colombo.
Srilanka winning the toss and batting first could never build on their fledging partnerships right through the innings. Every Srilankan batter got themselves in and could not continue and that has been the trend of their innings. The openers put on a promising 49 for 1st wicket when Avishka Fernando (33) got out after looking so good. The same trend continued right down the order with each batter getting starts and then getting out at the wrong time. Asalanka (38), Shanaka (39), Dhananjaya (14), Bhanuka (27) and Rajapaksa (24) all continued the same trend.
Finally, Karunaratne (43 off 35) and Chameera (13off 5) added 52 in the last 5 overs to take the Srilanka score to a competitive 262/9 in 50 overs. India B team too good for Srilanka in 1st ODI.
For India, it was a matter of great pleasure that after a long gap, Kuldeep and Chahal bowled in tandem and managed to recreate the old magic with both sharing 4 wickets in 19 overs. Krunal was economical and Deepak Chahar took 2/37.
In reply when India batted, Prithvi Shaw came out all guns blazing and played an electrifying knock of 43 off just 24 balls and full of dazzling strokes through the gaps and mostly on the ground. His driving through the off side was a treat to watch. Finally, Dushmanta Chameera hit him on the helmet with a rapid bouncer which Shaw tried to evade. The hold up for Shaw’s medical check-up affected his concentration and he got out immediately.
However, Ishan Kishan, making his ODI debut on his birthday cane out and slammed the first ball for a six straight down the ground to announce his intentions. He scored at a rapid rate with powerful and well-timed hits as India was well ahead of the asking rate and apparently was making a mockery of a competitive target.
Ishan ‘s(59) dismissal brought in Manish Pandey (26) who played a subdued knock with the skipper Dhawan who however looked in cruise control going along totally unnoticed due to Shaw and Kishan’s heroics.
After Pandey’s dismissal Surya Kumar Yadav also making his debut scored a quickfire 31 not out off 20 balls and stayed not out with Dhawan who held the innings together with a polished 86 not out off 95 balls and completed the emphatic win with 14 overs to go.
The Srilankan bowling never held any threats during the innings whatsoever.
