Ind v Eng 4th Test : India roars again !! win at Oval by 157 runs as Bumrah & Co decimates Eng batting

Its London again and its India again . After Lords its Oval .!!

After losing the Leeds test by an innings , India roared back at the Oval decimating the England 2nd innings for 210 after the hosts were going along nicely at 100/0 in the morning session.

Brilliant yorkers by Bumrah and creation of pressure from the other bowlers proved too much for England’s fragile batting once again after that Lords capitulation. England was skittled out for 210 afer being 100 for no loss . They lost 10 wickets for 110 runs in a sensational collapse as their batters failed to handle pressure.

After the openers put on a 100 runs ,it was Shardul Thakur of all people who got Burns(50) with a beautiful outswinger . Hameed and Malan batted for a while but Jadeja was making the ball to spin and bounce from the rough outside the lefthanders off stump to trouble Malan . Soon Malan(5) was runout in a poor misunderstanding with Hameed ,who after being given a life was bowled by Jadeja for a patient 63. England now 141/3.

Bumrah was brought in for a spell with Root and Pope batting, and his spell broke the back of England from which they never recovered . Pope (2) was bowled through the gate by a searing incoming delivery and Bairstow(0) was blown away by a brutal yorker . England now 146/5.

Pope was Bumrah’s 100th test wicket in his 24th test, one test earlier than Kapil Dev

It was 149/6 when Jadeja got Moeen (0) caught at short leg and now it was left to Root and Woakes to save England with one and a half sessions left.

Root and Woakes were showing signs  of saving the game but Shardul “Lord” Thakur once again showed his midas touch getting Root (36) to play on to his stumps to break the back of England batting. England 182/7.

Chris Woakes after looking good for a while was caught at midwicket off Umesh for 18 and now England were 193/8.

The last two wickets went soon after tea with Overton and Anderson being dismissed in quick succession..

The Indian bowlers were ruthless. Bumrah (2/27) was brilliant with his brutal yorkers , Umesh (3/60) was hostile and Shardul (2/22) was magic. The fast bowlers were getting the reverse swing going in the dry conditions which added more to England batsmen’s discomfort. And finally Jadeja (2/50) whose selection was contentious as Ashwin missed out again ,  kept the England batting on a leash by bowling very well on the last day.

Absoutely magnificient win by India after they were at 127/7 in the first innings . Shardul ‘s 57 off 36 balls kept India in the game as India reached 191.  Umesh Yadav getting Joe Root for 21 late on the first day was crucial and next morning England was struggling at 62/5 in their first innings . However their middle order played well to take a 99 run lead but Rohit Sharma’s first ever overseas test hundred (127) in the 2nd innings under pressure and Pujara’s 61 set up India in the match and from there fine middle order contributions from Kohli (44) Pant (50) and again Shardul (60) ensured that England was set a stiff target ……and the rest is history . The Indian bowlers were brilliant once again in the second innings .

Rohit Sharma for his second innings 100 was the man of the match which could have gone to Shardul Thakur as well for his brilliant all round show.

This is India’s first win at Oval since their historic test and series win at the Oval in 1971. In other words the 50th anniversary of the 1971 win has been appropriately celebrated with a win on the same venue after 50 years (1971-2021)

India now lead the series 2-1 with one test to play at Manchester.
