Ind v Eng 4th test: Eng batting rattled by Bumrah

Indian bowlers hit back strongly before close after their batsman put up another mediocre display getting 191 all-out courtesy of some belligerent late hitting by Thakur. Earlier Root won the toss and put India in under overcast conditions. England brought in Chris Woakes and Ollie Pope to replace Sam Curran and unavailable Jos Buttler respectively.

However, a big controversy was the Indian team selection. They brought in Umesh Yadav and Shardul Thakur and rested Ishant Sharma and Mohammad Shami. Again no spot for Ashwin in the Team XI as Jadeja remained the lone spinner allrounder.

India started badly losing both openers to some superb bowling. Woakes got Rohit (11) to edge a great delivery that pitched, bounced and moved away to take the edge. Rahul (17) since his Lords 100 seems to have hit a bad patch getting lbw to Robinson after looking good and Pujara (4) was back in his struggling ways getting caught behind off Anderson after playing 31 balls.

In a surprise move after Pujara dismissal, Jadeja came out to bat ahead of Rahane, maybe to break the left-right combination and unsettle the lengths of England bowlers. It did not work as he was caught in the slips of Woakes for 10. Ind v Eng 4th test: Eng batting rattled by Bumrah, Umesh  after India’s mediocre 191.

Kohli was playing well, got his cover drives and on drives going but was troubled by the English bowlers after lunch and was dropped by Root at 22. However, he completed his 50 but could not carry on as an unplayable delivery from Robinson took the edge and was snapped up by Bairstow. Kohli out 50.

Rahane’s(14) and Pant’s (9) poor show continue. The former caught at gully off Overton and the latter skying Woakes’ slower one to mid-on. Both, specially Rahane has now question marks over their spot in the next test.

Now came the great fightback. Shardul Thakur took the clock back to Gabba and staged a brilliant fightback scoring a dazzling 57 off just 36 balls and getting his 50 off 31 balls to become the fastest 50 scorer vs England in tests surpassing Kapil Dev. Shardul hit glorious shots all around the ground, a straight drive and a couple of his pulls worth a mention. From 127/7 he salvaged the innings to a great extent in the company of Umesh Yadav (10) as India reached 190/7 and then lost 3 wickets for 1 run to get 191 all out.

For England, Chris Woakes made a successful return with 4/55 and Robinson took 3/38. Both Robinson and Woakes bowled superbly. Anderson looked below his best in this innings and got 1 wicket.

In reply, Bumrah made early inroads for India getting Burns playon and Hameed caught off a backfoot slash as England slipped early to 6/2.  However, Root and Malan looked for runs and punished loose deliveries to take England rapidly to 52/2 when Umesh coming back for a 2nd spell took the huge wicket of Root (21), clean bowled through the gate off a brilliant in cutter to get India right back in the game. Malan at 26 was at the close with nightwatchman Overton as England slumped to 53/3 and the game evenly poised.
