Ind v Eng 2nd test: Brilliant captains innings by Joe Root gets Eng slender lead

Joe Root played a flawless captain’s innings to ensure that England take a slender 27 run lead on the 1st innings against India at Lords.

England was all out for 391 on the final ball of the days’ play.

Starting at 119/3 Root and Bairstow put on a fabulous 121 run stand for the 4th wicket. While Root was sublime, Bairstow (57) stroked some powerful fours till he attempted. To pull Siraj’s short ball from round the wicket.

Meanwhile, Root completed his 100 after lunch and looked in great nick, hitting sublime shots and scoring with ease. It looked as if he was batting on a different pitch. After Bairstow’s exit Root had 2 50 plus stands with Buttler (23) and Moeen Ali (27)  before finally Ishant Sharma struck getting wickets of Buttler bowled through the gate, & then Moeen and Sam Curran to slip catches. Ind v Eng 2nd test: Brilliant captains innings by Joe Root gets Eng slender lead .

The lower order England batting could not produce the same resistance in the face of some inspiring bowling by Mohammad Siraj in particular.  Siraj bowled with venom and great stamina. Even had Joe Root struggling against his incoming balls with multiple reviews turned down.

When finally Anderson was bowled by Shami on the last ball of the day. England had managed a 28 run lead with Root remaining high and dry at 180 not out, A majestic innings.

Siraj (4/94) was supremely good but the others bowled well only in patches with Ishant ( 3/69 ) and Shami (2/95) picking up wickets. Bumrah went wicketless and bowled many no-balls along with others. India has away 33 extras in a game of margins.

It is important now for the Indian batters to build up a good score at pace and put England into bat late on the 4th day with the pitch getting some wear and tear after strong sunshine .

Has India erred in excluding Ashwin for this test ?  Only time will tell.
