A superb bowling spell by Harshal Patel followed by a fine 48 by De Villiers took RCB over the finishing line in a tight contest against reigning champions Mumbai Indians in the opening game of IPL 2021.
Mumbai was sent to bat first. They started fluently with Rohit (19) looking good till he was runout in a misunderstanding with Chris Lynn . However Suryakumar Yadav stepped in and he started from where finished in the ODI series vs England . Both Lynn and Surya looked in complete control till the 10th over scoring at a fearsome rate of nearly 10 runs per over and both were striking the ball beautifully till Surya (31) edged a catch to De Villiers off Jamieson’ s lifting delivery followed by Lynn (49 ) who got out against run of play spooning a simple return catch to Sundar as he tried to hoist him .
The twin dismissals completely slowed down the Mumbai innings as the batsmen that followed struggled to come to terms with an increasingly slowish pitch . Ishan (28) looked likely to force the pace but he was struggling with timing on this pitch. Others like Hardik , Pollard , Krunal looked rusty and got out as Harshal Patel began his match changing spell. He bowled superbly changing the pace , bowled wicket to wicket and completely strangled the lower order Mumbai batting to get 5/27 —- first time any player got 5 wicket haul vs Mumbai Indians . Jamieson on his debut bowled well too (1/27 off 4 overs)
In reply RCB had Sundar to open with Kohli due to Paddikal not playing as he was advised rest by doctors but Sundar (10) had a subdued stay so was new boy Rajat Patidar who came at 3.
Kohli and Maxwell got a good partnership of 52 . Kohli showed glimpses of his best but had to adjust to the surface . However Maxwell looked in good nick clobbering expensive Rahul Chahar for boundaries and a huge six over deep midwicket . Maxwell was also using his reverse sweeps effectively . Needing a wicket, Rohit brought back Bumrah who immediately a counted for the RCB captain lbw for 33. Soon Maxwell (39) went to debutant 20 year old left arm pacer Marco Jansen caught down legside . Jansen further got Shahbaz Ahmed trying to pull a short ball thus capping off a nice debut .
However AB de Villiers held the second half of the innings together with brilliant strokes at regular intervals , cutting and driving the fast bowlers on the up showing his pure genius and adjusting well to the slowish surface though wickets were falling regularly at other end with batters getting out for single digit scores as Bumrah and Jansen made inroads. De Villiers (48) controlled the chase nicely and hit timely boundaries till he got runout in last over but Harshal Patel took the winning single and RCB won on the final ball by 2 wickets in a tight finish.
At the end it looked that Mumbai were 15-20 runs short after the fluent batting of Lynn and Suryakumar Yadav .
Thus true to the tradition , Mumbai loses their first match in IPL for the 9 year running . Both teams looked rusty in parts and dropped catches
