It was a rather anticlimactic end to an exciting 5 match T20I series which was locked at 2-2 . Australia winning the toss again on a slow surface , chose to bat but could not take full advantage of batting first in the decider.
Phillips’s (2) promotion to open failed as he was lbw to a straight one from Boult. Finch and Wade got into a productive stand and both looked to have adjusted to the pitch . Wade played some spanking shots on both sides of the pitch but got put after scoring 44 off 29 balls . Finch tried to play the long innings but was cut short at 36 and Maxwell (1) went cheaply sweeping to deep square leg. Later Stoinis (26) played a good cameo but tight bowling by Ish Sodhi(3/24) and Boult ( 2wickets) ensured that Australia could get no more than 142/8 in 20 overs.
In reply , the Kiwis with Guptill and Conway came out all guns blazing as runs flowed in all directions . Guptill hit 4 towering sixes off which two were from Zampa and one landed on the roof. Conway lived upto his recent billing with spanking pull shots and drives as the Aussies could not contain the openinng duo. 106 runs came in first 11 overs which settled the man and the series. Conway (36) & Williamson (0) got out to successive deliveries from pacy Riley Meredith the latter lbw. However Glenn Phillips played some dazzling shots in his 34 off 16 balls to to the game beyond Aussies even though Guptill (71) got out towards the end . Australia lost by 7 wickets with 27 balls to spare.
Guptill was awarded the man of the match and Ish Sodhi for his 13 wickets at 11 average and accurate bowling in the series took the man of the series award as New Zealand triumphed by 3-2 .
Australia 142/8 ( Wade 44 , Finch 36, Sodhi 3/24)
New Zealand 143/3 ( Guptill 71 , Conway 36, Meredith 2/39)
