What a day it was for Indian cricket !! West Indies were invincible during the 1980s and were smashing all opposition with their fine array of batsmen and the most fearsome pace bowling quartlet . Having won the World cups in 1975 & 1979 they were expected to complete the hattrick in 1983 and reached the final without any alarms.
Flashback of the epic win :
India having just come out of 2 back to back test series losses 0-3 to Pakistan and 0-2 to West Indies, were surprisingly playing superbly in the World cup before they almost stuttered against Zimbabwe but were bailed out by Kapil’s famous 175.
India reached the finals after outplaying home favourites England in the semis while West Indies blew away Pakistan in another semifinal.
In the final India won the toss and batted but lost out of form Gavaskar (2) early. However, Srikkant (38) and Mohinder Amarnath (26) batted with courage. Faced the fast bowlers well before both left in quick succession. Which led to a collapse with Yashpal , Kapil (15), Kirti Azad and Binny getting out in quick succession. However, a useful last wicket batting took India to 183, an inadequate score considering the strong Windies batting.
In reply, The West Indies lost the dangerous Greenidge early. However, Viv Richards looked in great touch and was dominating the Indian bowling with glorious strokeplay. However getting a touch overconfident. He hooked a short ball from the indomitable Madanlal to be caught at deep midwicket by Kapil Dev. Who took the skier very confidently. It was a pressure catch to dismiss the dangerous Richards for 33.
Richards’ dismissal brought about pressure on the Windies batting as Madanlal. Binny rattled the middle order to leave West Indies in disarray at 76/6 which brought Dujon and Marshall together. Both of whom played sensibly as West Indies inched towards the target.
However, India had an unlikely hero in Mohinder Amarnath. Whose gentle medium pace accounted for both Dujon(25) and Marshall(18) while Kapil ejected Roberts to leave Windies at 126/9.
However Garner and Holding batted sensibly to inch towards the winning score. But Mohinder produced another straight delivery which Holding missed as he tried to pull. And was lbw to leave India sensational winners by 43 runs. Gifting the most memorable image of Indian cricket of Kapil Dev lifting the world cup at the Lords balcony !!
The 1st world cup win led to huge celebrations. The Indian fans swarmed the Lords ground immediately after the match ended and it was a sea of humanity. Back in India firecrackers were burst , fans screaming ,sweets distributed & the bhangra went on till late night after the win came past midnight .
A great moment particularly for the generation of cricket fans who were teenagers during the 1980s
