IND W vs ENG W- Test Match Day 4 Highlights

It was an excellent Indian fightback by their debutants that helped the tourists to salvage thrilling draw from the jaws of defeat against England which looked unlikely for much of the last days play. Trailing by 82 at the end of the 3rd day after the team had reached 83/1 following on, Shafali and Deepti started India’s proceedings. However, Shafali (63) could not stay for long and was brilliantly caught in the deep by a diving Brunt off Ecclestone. Punam Rout joined Deepti at 99/2 and both batted solidly and sensibly to pile on the runs . Deepti Sharma looked in no trouble whatsoever looking immaculate and the diminutive Punam Rout very compact and steady as they added 72 runs for the 3rd wicket till Deepti (54) played an ill-advised sweep before lunch to open up the game for England.

Post lunch India simply slumped as 5 wickets fell for 28 runs in a stunning collapse similar to in the first innings. Skipper Mithali (4) tried to glide one and was bowled by Ecclestone to cap off a poor performance by her. Punam after looking so compact fell for 39 trying to pull Sciver. Harmanpreet (8) was caught trying to sweep Ecclestone and Vastrakar (12) was bowled by Knight to leave India tottering at 199/7 with still lots of time left for the 4th day. However, the first signs of rearguard action surfaced with Sneh Rana and Shikha Pandey (18) getting into a crucial stand of 41 before Shikha departed to leave India at 240/8 with only 75 ahead and enough time left for England to force a win.

However, next came the remarkable partnership between Sneh Rana and keeper Taniya Bhatia. It was a gripping fightback by the two debutants. Who matched each other stroke for stroke and runs started to flow. The strategy looked simple, 1st remove the ring of close-in fielders with aggressive strokeplay. Then continue the momentum to extend the lead and never allow the pressure to build.

Both players played some exciting shots including lots of cover drives cuts and legside sweeps as the runs began to flow. Sneh looked an accomplished batter and the diminutive Taniya looked compact like Raut before her . The tired England bowlers were unable to restrict the scoring as the lead continued to expand . Finally with 14 overs to go both captains agreed to end the match in a draw leaving Sneh Pradhan not out on 80 and Tanya Bhatia. Unbeaten on 44 in a gallant unbeaten 104 run stand.

For England Ecclestone was the standout bowler with 4 wickets in each innings.

17 year old Shafali Verma for her spectacular debut with scores of 96 & 63 got the player of the match award. As both teams shared 2 points for a draw.

The biggest takeaways from England were the performances of Ecclestone , Sciver and Knight whereas for India , the debutants Shafali , Deepti , Bhatia and Sneh were outstanding .
