EngW v IndW T20Is: Mandhana’s sublime 70 in vain as Eng win series

A brilliant 89 not out off 56 balls by Danielle Watt took England to an emphatic 8 wicket win in the final T20I and thereby winning the 3 match series 2-1.

India rightly choosing to bat on winning the toss, this being a pressure match, started poorly as Brunt got her revenge on Shafali Verma for conceding 20 in an over to the teenager in the previous game. This time Shafali play on and was bowl 2nd ball. Harleen fail to inspire confidence at number 3 and the stage was set for the captain and vice-captain to rescue India.

Smriti Mandhana was playing a sublime innings, with gorgeous cover drives and finding gaps beautifully through her pull shots. One inside out shot over cover stepping out to the spinner was the shot of the match. She got great support from Harmanpreet who looked ominous during her sparkling 36 from 26 balls and together they added 68 for the 3rd wicket in just 9 overs before Harmanpreet was lbw to Sciver. Mandhana raised her tempo in the final overs hitting sparkling shots before she was dismiss for 70 off 51 balls caught in the deep off Brunt.

Richa Ghosh then hit a quickfire 20 off 13 balls to help India reach 153/6 in 20 overs. EngW v IndW T20Is: Mandhana’s sublime 70 in vain as Eng win series.

For England, the experienced duo of Ecclestone (3/35) and Katherine Brunt (2/27) took the wickets while Sciver (1/16 off 4 overs) was economical.

In reply, India had an encouraging early success with prolific Beaumont (11) lbw to Deepti Sharma. However, Danielle Watt and Sciver get into a brilliant 112 run stand that seal India’ s fate. Watt (89notout off 56 balls) played a magnificent knock, plundering runs at will as the target got nearer . Sciver (42 in 36 balls) showed great skills to keep her company till she got out but England were already in cruise control by then and won in the 19th over.

Watt was the player of the match and Sciver for her all-around show was the player of the series.

India thus lost 6-10 on cumulative points but showed very good fighting qualities for a major part of the tour. With more improvements on all 3 aspects of the game, this young team can become a stronger force in women’s cricket .
