EngW v IndW ODI : Mithali (75*) steers India to a crucial win fetching 2 points
A high quality unbeaten 75 by skipper Mithali Raj with significant contributions from Mandhana (49) and Sneh Rana (24) helped India to surpass a modest score of 219 by England in 47 overs to reduce the series defeat margin in the 3 match ODIs to 2-1. EngW v IndW ODI : Mithali (75*) steers India to a crucial win fetching 2 points.
England having to bat first scored an under par 219 in 47 overs after a rain-delayed start which reduced 6 overs from the game.
After Shikha Pandey trapped in form Beaumont lbw for 0. Winfield Hill (36) and Heather Knight got into a fine 67 2nd wicket stand before Rana got the breakthrough getting out Hill. Sciver (49) & Knight (46) got into a 42 run stand. However, the Indian bowling kept the run rate under check and at no stage, England looked like getting away. This required more risk-taking by the later order batters and the Indian bowlers took full advantage of picking wickets at regular intervals. Dunkley (28) towards the end added useful runs but England could get no further than 219.
For India, Deepti Sharma was the most successful with 3/47 and was ably assisted by all the bowlers each of whom got a wicket.
In reply, India lost Shafali Verma(19) relatively early followed by off colour Jemimah Rodrigues (4). However, Smriti Mandhana batted beautifully playing sparkling cover drives. Pulls before she got out against the run of play for 49 polish runs.
Mithali Raj had by then settled down well and played a highly measured knock, picking her moments to play aggressively and kept the scoreboard moving by rotating strike judiciously. She lost Harmanpreet (16) who had yet another below-average outing getting out to a poor reverse sweep. Deepti Sharma (18) played a good cameo but it was the steady partnership between Mithali and Sneh Rana (24). Which took India closer to the target. Rana after her priceless 80 notout to save the test match, again showed great temperament and match awareness before she missed the line while sweeping. However, by then the match was decide and India crossed the line with 3 balls to spare in an intriguing chase with Mithali staying unbeaten on 75 off 86 balls.
Mithali Raj also reached a massive milestone of scoring the highest number of runs in women’s cricket in the world across formats surpassing Charlotte Edwards’ tally of 10273 runs.
Ecclestone was yet again England’s best bowler with 2/36.
India at least pulled off a consolation win though England won the ODI series 2-1.
