A superb spell of bowling by allrounder Chris Woakes and fine batting from Bairstow and Root helped England, cruise to a comfortable 5 wicket win over mediocre Srilanka in the 1st ODI.
Srilanka sent in to bat first lost 3/46 before a fine 99 run stand between skipper Kusal Parera (73) and Hassaranga (54) took them to a position of strength at 3/145 at around 29 overs. The skipper played a superb knock laced with his typical explosive shots on the offside while Hassaranga was striking the ball with confidence. However, there was an inexplicable collapse after that with 7 wickets falling for just 40 runs and the tourists were bowled out for 185 in 42.4 overs.
Chris Woakes back in the England squad prepared himself well for the forthcoming test series vs India with skilful swing bowling, moving the ball around off great lengths to pick up 4/18. David Willey made his left arm seam count with 3/44.
England chased down the score in quick time with Bairstow in ominous touch, striking the ball with power and scintillating timing to score a rapid 44 off just 21 balls before getting bowled off inside edge. However, Root looked solid and in fluent touch as his unbeaten 79 kept the chase going in spite of some lively pace bowling by Dusmanta Chameera who managed to rattle the English middle order with 3 wickets only to delay the inevitable as England romped home by 5 wickets.
