MS Dhoni is known to make surprise and unexpected decisions at times and that is was evident when he suddenly retired from test cricket in the middle of the Australian test series down under in 2014.
Recently Ravichandran Ashwin in his YouTube channel shared his experience on Dhoni’s sudden retirement from test cricket in Australia in 2014. According to Ashwin both he and Dhoni was batting to save the MCG test. After the match ended Dhoni took a stump as a souvenir and said that he was done and retiring from test cricket.
Later in the evening Ashwin, Ishant Sharma and Suresh Raina spend the evening in Dhoni’s room and right through the evening Dhoni was wearing his Indian test Jersey. He was also was emotional and shed few tears.
In Ashwin’s words, this is how he summed up
“I remember when he retired from Test cricket in 2014, I was batting with him to save the match in Melbourne. But once we lost, he simply picked up a stump and walked off saying he’s done. It was quite an emotional moment for him. Ishant Sharma, Suresh Raina, and I were sitting in his room that evening. He was still wearing his Test match jersey through the entire night and he shed a few tears as well,”
Dhoni was never a player who played for records. He was on the cusp of completing 100 test appearances for India when he retired.
At the time of his test retirement, Dhoni had played 90 tests and scored 4876 runs at 38 average with 6 hundreds.
Dhoni finally retired from all the formats in international cricket on 15th August 2020.
After Dhoni’s retirement , Virat Kohli led India in the final test at SCG in that series in 2014 which Australia won by 2-0 by winning the first two tests at Adelaide and Brisbane. Kohli scored 692 runs in that series for India.
