India’s historic 2011 World cup win completes 10 years today
Today is the 10th year anniversary of India’s one of the greatest moment in World cup history, their 2nd world cup win in 2011. It was a bright and sunny summer’s day in Mumbai and the Wankhede Stadium was packed to the fullest to witness the moment of history. Lots of cricket fans of current generation were very small or not even born when Kapil’s Devils won the 1st ever World cup in 1983 beating the mighty West Indies at Lords .
The nerves were all on display as there was confusions at the toss which was re-done and Sri Lanka won the toss & batted first on a hot afternoon of the day night final. The Indian fast bowlers were tight and on the mark as Sri Lanka had a nervous but a steady progress batting first with skipper Sangakkara and Mahela Jayawardene creating a firm base till gradually Sri Lanka unleashed their shots as the slog overs were reached.
On a fine batting wicket Mahela Jayawardene showcased great display of touch play as he gracefully moved towards his 100 as Kulasekara (32) and Thissara Perera (22 off 9 balls) took on the Indian bowling. Jayawardene completed a fine 103 as Srilanka reached a formidable 274/6 batting first in a final.
India were rocked twice early by Malinga as he despatched Sehwag (0) lbw and Tendulkar (18) caught behind as Srilanka were upbeat at the start while the crowd went quiet specially after Sachin’s dismissal but sensible batting from the grim faced Gambhir and a young and dapper Virat Kohli (35) calmed the nerves of Indian fans which included a number of dignatories in the VIP box as well as high profile film stars like Aamir Khan and Priety Zinta with the national tricolour. As the Gambhir – Kohli stand grew , the tricolour were fluttering in the galleries till much against the run of play Kohli (35) was caught and bowled superbly by Dilshan.
While the fans were waiting to welcome man of the tournament Yuvraj Singh into the ground, it was the stockily built figure of captain MS Dhoni who stepped out at number 5 promoting himself for the biggest game of his life. While Gambhir looked in control, Dhoni took hard singles and started unleashing his drives and cuts against loose deliveries as the Srilankan spinners led by Muralitharan was finding it tough in the evening dew . However India again lost a wicket against the run of play with Gambhir bowled trying to step out to Perera for 97 top quality runs in the final.
Finally Yuvraj Singh emerged but it was the “captain cool” Dhoni who was going to take on the bowling as he exhibited his clinical mind and raw power to despatch any loose balls as Srilankans tried hard to break the stand. It was the ” Mahi way ” in the Wankhede that evening as India marched closer and closer to the target while the national tricolour had taken over the stadium. The decibel levels increased with every run and surely now India cannot be deprived.
Finally the iconic moment came with 10 balls to go, that defined India’s world cup win and Dhoni’s greatest moment — a straight six over long on off Nawan Kulasekara , Dhoni 91 not out, Yuvraj 22 not out, India win by 6 wickets and the celebrations began……
It was mayhem at the Wankhede . The World cup has come home after 28 long years !! The crowd was ecstatic. The VIPs were over the moon. Film personalities Anu Malik , Aamir Khan and Priety Zinta were waving the national tricolour as the Indian players were hugging each other on the ground with some of them in tears overwhelmed by emotions . Sachin Tendulkar, after playing 21 years of international cricket and 5 world cups finally got his much awaited World cup title on his on his home ground and was on the shoulders of Yusuf Pathan, Virat Kohli and others as the victory lap was being done with the tricolour.
Later it was the turn of Gary Kirsten , the coach to get on the shoulders . The fireworks were in the sky and the marine drive outside the stadium was packed with cars as nothing moved . It was a moment to savour, which comes rarely in a lifetime . Finally the skipper took the cup and whole of India celebrated…..
…..and Ravi Shastri ‘s commentary of the final moments echoed the Indian hearts forever ….“Dhoni finishes off in style. A magnificent strike into the crowd! India lift the World Cup after 28 years! & the party starts in the dressing room”
