CSK’s party in a sensational thriller !!

Wankhede Stadium, April 21, IPL 2021 was the witness to one of the most sensational cricket matches of all times !! It was a pity that no crowd was at the stadium to witness the thriller unfold. How does one describe such a match?

It was CSK and KKR locking horns in one of the most insane cricket matches ever. CSK had made 220/3 in 20 overs. A mammoth score to chase and KKR just lost their full batting lineup within the powerplay due to highly incompetent batting performance. Gill Rana, Tripathy , Morgan and Narine all were dismissed in rapid succession not been able to force the pace facing a huge target.

Deepak Chahar again got assistance from the pitch in initial overs claiming 4/29 as the KKR top-order went for too many big shots in the powerplay and kept losing wickets without realizing that one needs to stay for a while to score big runs if anything above 200 is chased in 20 overs. It was a shocking batting display by KKR in the powerplay as they were tottering at 31/5 and a huge 100 run win for CSK looming large.

However, Dinesh Karthik and Andre Russell had other ideas. They launched a fierce counter-attack on the Chennai bowling as boundaries and sixes started to fly in all directions. It was sensational power-hitting and the CSK attack which was, few overs ago made a meal of KKR batsmen , were wilting under the onslaught .

After hitting 3 fours and 6 monster sixes and putting the CSK bowling to disarray, Andre Russell decided to leave a delivery from Sam Curran and was bowled against the run of play for an explosive innings of 54 off 22 balls . Thus he and Kartick dragged the score from 31/5 to 112/6 when Russell was finally dismissed. Both the KKR and CSK fans thought then –” game over” .

However Pat Cummins had other ideas , he joined Karthik and had a bit of a partnership till Karthik was dismissed for 40 off 24 balls at 146/7 in the 15th over and now surely game over with 3 wickets to go , bowlers to bat and KKR needing 75 more .

With nothing to lose Cummins made a fierce assault on the CSK bowling with monster sixes and firmly struck boundaries, by driving, pulling and slashing anything in his arc. The CSK bowlers had not yet recovered from the Russell blitzkrieg and now Cummins is doing an encore.

It was KKR vs Cummins in the last 5 overs with Varun Chakravarthy giving him huge support. Cummins took most of the strike and refusing singles simply smashed the bowling of Curran or Shardul taking 30 runs off a Curran over and Shardul faced an almost similar fate. After Varun and Nagarkoti dismissal, 20 runs were required in the last over. However, Prasidh was run out the first ball and CSK won by 18 runs in a nail-biting thriller. Cummins’ heroic 66not outt off 34 balls with 4 fours and 6 sixes fell just 3 hits short.

Earlier a brilliant 115 stand in 12 overs between back in form Ruturaj Gaekwad and Faf Duplessis laid the foundations of a big CSK score. Gaekwad played gorgeous shots , driving superbly through covers and playing cracking pull shots and heaves on the on side to score 64 off 42 balls with 4 sixes. Faf looked in great nick , and as his innings progressed he unleashed his power-hitting combined with superb cricket shots.

There were sparkling cameos from Moeen (25 off 11 balls) and Dhoni ( 17 off 8 balls). At the end man of the match Faf (95notout off 60 balls, 4 sixes) fell short by 5 runs to reach his 100 as CSK finished at 220/3. The KKR bowling was in total shambles and looked way off the mark with only Varun (1/27) and Narine (1/34) maintaining better control.
