IPL 2021 witnesses yet another one-sided contest as the first match in Delhi between Chennai Super Kings and Sunrisers Hyderabad ended in a convincing 7 wicket victory for CSK.

The pitch was very true and good for batting. However, SRH batting first struggled to get into a good momentum. Bairstow was out cheaply to Sam Curran, caught in the deep and Warner struggled to get into any kind of momentum throughout his stay at the wicket.

His shots were all hitting the fielders as he struggled to find gaps and showed his frustration at not being able to force the pace. He did hit 2 sixes towards the backend in his 57 off 55 balls but it was a pure struggle for him as he had a long partnership with Manish Pandey who made a good comeback into the XI with a more fluent 61 off 46 balls after being criticized for slow scoring in earlier games and subsequently dropped from the team for a few matches.

The 100 plus partnership between Warner and Manish Pandey set the stage for a backend acceleration which was brilliantly provided by Kane Williamson’s crisp hitting in his 26notout off just 10 balls. The kiwi captain was hitting the ball superbly on both sides of the pitch and was also helped by a rapid 12 off 4 balls by Kedar Jadav , finally taking the Sunrisers to 171/3 which was only a par score on a true pitch.

The good quality of the pitch was further proved as CSK openers started fluently and stroked the ball to all parts as Ruturaj Gaekwad and Faf Duplessis looked in no trouble at all scoring rapidly, milking the SRH bowling which lacked the presence of Bhuvneswar Kumar who did not play this game due to a niggle.

Man of the match Ruturaj played glorious shots both off the front foot and back foot scoring an attractive-looking 75 off 44 balls. Duplessis gave him great support and played many sumptuous shots scoring a classy 56 as SRH bowling struggled to create any impact. Finally, Rashid Khan got 3/36 dismissing both the openers, Gaekwad bowled and Faf lbw. Moeen Ali (15) played a swift cameo and finally, Raina and Jadeja ensured a 19th over finish for a comfortable 7 wicket win for CSK.

While CSK looks in great momentum, the SRH team needs improvements in both batting and bowling. Warner’s lack of fluency in this season is hurting them and the bowling looks pedestrian. They need Bhuvneshwar to get fit quickly and maybe find a way to play Jason Holder .
