Can India repeat the Ashes test results at Leeds of 1981 or 2019 ?
India has staged a great fightback on the 3rd day of the current test at Leeds with Pujara and Kohli unbeaten and still looking good. Work is cut out now for England as they will take the new ball immediately on the resumption of the 4th day which will prove to be a massive challenge for India.
The question in everyone’s mind is, can India stage a miracle. As England did in their two famous Ashes test at Leeds in 1981 & 2019 ?
It is still a long way off with India still trailing by 139. However, to understand the sensational turn of events of those two famous Ashes test at Leeds we go down memory lane. Can India repeat the Ashes test results at Leeds of 1981 or 2019 ?
Aus v Eng Leeds Test 1981
In this test Australia batted first and scored 401 for 9 declared with John Dyson scoring 102, Kim Hughes 89 & Yallop 58. In reply, England was bowled out for only 174 on the 3rd-day courtesy. Great bowling by Lillee, Alderman and Lawson who took 4 , 3 & 3 wickets respectively. At the end of the 3rd day, England were already 6/1 following on.
England further slumped to 135/7 in the second innings and with everything set for an Australian win for them to go 2 up in the series. The England players were said to have checked out of their hotels on the morning of the day of eventual turnaround.
From 135/7 Ian Botham took the match by the scruff of the neck. Played a sensational innings of 149 not out and brilliantly supported by Graham Dilley (56) and Old (29). Botham’s murderous knock came from 148 balls as he smashed the strong Australian bowling attack. England made 356 and set a slender target of 130.
With Australia expected to win, Big Bob Willis had other ideas. Bowling fiercely and creating disconcerting bounce he decimated Australia,as they were blown away for 111 and thus losing the match sensationally by 19 runs with Willis taking 8/43.

In good bowling conditions Australia was asked to bat first and inspite of good knocks from Warner (61) and Labuschagne (74) they folded up for 179 with Archer (6/45) causing havoc with his speed and movement.
However, in reply England were decimated for only 67 courtesy of sensational fast bowling by Hazlewood (5/30) and Pat Cummins (3/23).
With 112 run lead Australia looked set to go ahead by 2-0 in the series. However, they could not bat England out of the game. Australia was 246 all out in the 2nd innings with Labuschagne(80) again playing a marvellous knock and Ben Stokes getting 3 wickets.
With 359 set to win in the 4th innings, England started poorly at 15/2. Later after Root’s(77) & Denly’s (50) dusmissals they were 159/4. However, Ben Stokes played a massive knock of 125 not out and singlehandedly took England to 362/9 , a win by just 1 wicket with last man Leach. There were lots of last moment excitements with Lyon missing an easy runout, Stokes lbw not given by the umpire while Australia was left with no reviews.
Thus England won sensationally by 1 wicket even after scoring 67 only in their first innings.
While the Leeds with in 1981 helped England finally to win the Ashes 3-1, in 2019 the Ashes ended 2-2.
Hence this sums up two unbelievable results at Leeds in which the team struggling throughout the match finally staging remarkable victories. Hence big examples in front of India as they continue in their quest to salvage something from the current Leeds test . However first they have to wipe off the 139 deficit before trying to venture out with above heroics
